One of the biggest troubles of white-collar travelers is annual leaves that are never enough.. Most of the time, we have to make a one-way choice in a one-week vacation plan that we scrutinize; either a sea vacation or a cultural trip. But an island like medicine where they all come together is waiting for us.. The white beaches of Africa that will take your breath away full of exotic trees; underwater diversity that does justice to the ocean; giant tortoises; Its capital, where you can see Arab, Indian, African and European influences together; the endless entertainment life on the beach and its colorful people living in a world very different from this life.. The pearl of Africa, the apple of its eye… Whatever you call it, the place that gave life to Freddie Mercury: Zanzibar… The current Zanzibar Travel Guide details that I have prepared by combining my travel notes after visiting every corner of the island for the second time are as follows:

General Information About Zanzibar Island
Although Zanzibar island hangs like a stand-alone country, it is officially Tanzania’ or an island. ZANzibar, which left the British colony in 1963, decides to merge with TANganyika in 1964 and the name Tan-Zan-ia is born. Consisting of 2 large islands, Zanzibar and Pemba, this autonomous region has its own parliament, president and flag, but still gets electricity from the mainland.. Although the majority of the people in Tanzania are Christians, the people in Zanzibar are completely Muslim.. We should not be surprised by the Arab influence on the island, which was ruled by the Sultan of Oman for many years.
For the island of Zanzibar, “it is highly developed, abundant and abundant compared to many regions in Africa.” we can say. The reason is that it has been an important trade center for centuries.. This situation also causes humanity to host a disgraceful history because the Sultan of Oman, who took the island under his protection, initiated the slavery trade for the development of the island and led the people gathered from the tribes in East Africa to be sold to the Arabian Peninsula and India.. Zanzibar is the last place where slavery was banned in the world.. In addition, the ivory trade was promoted in the same period and animal slaughter was paved.. Let me talk a little about the positive aspects; The fact that it became one of the most important spice producers in the world also contributed to the development of the island.
Today, Zanzibar is the most important tourism center of the region.. Zanzibar, which is also a spice paradise, is one of the few producers of coconut.. Of course, this is reflected in the policy as well.. The reason that the agreements made at the time of unification with the mainland are not fulfilled disturbs the majority of the people and they think that they have the means to be self-sufficient.. While the ruling party insists on sticking to the mainland, the number of supporters of independence is increasing day by day.. If it happens, Zanzibar will be the first in its history.
How to Get to Zanzibar?
You have two alternatives to get to the island of Zanzibar: Take the ferry from Dar es Salaam or come directly to the island by plane.
* Transportation by Air
Zanzibar has a small airport for those who are considering going by plane from Turkey.. Now THY’s non-stop flights from Istanbul have started.. Prices are very high but the journey takes about 8 hours. The most economical flights that I could find belong to Flydubai company via Dubai, which we used on our last visit.. A direct flight from Turkey to Dar es Salaam and then going to Zanzibar with a plane that costs about $60 is a preferable method.. If you do not intend to see another place in Tanzania, it will be the most comfortable, healthy and advantageous way to come to Zanzibar by direct plane.
* Transportation by Ferry
Other alternatives to come to Zanzibar another method is to take the fast ferries departing from the city center of Dar es Salaam.. Ferry fee regular $35, VIP $50. You can buy the tickets online or from the sales office next to the pier.
There are two separate ferry companies: Azam Marine and Zanzibar Fast Ferries
We went to the island by ferry, as we went on our first trip in Tanzania as a continuation of our safari.. The journey takes about 2 hours. It is difficult to say that it is very comfortable; too crowded, you risk standing. For a more comfortable journey, you can choose the ventilated and comfortable VIP section.. I certainly do not insist on recommending this road as there have been accidents in the past years. Dar es Salaam is among the few cities I dislike.. If you don’t have much experience in Sub-Saharan African countries, you may have some difficulties in Dar es Salaam and you may want to keep your time to a minimum.
“HOW TO TAKE OVERLAND SAFARI TOUR IN AFRICA?” CLICK TO READ THE ARTICLE.
A few suggestions for Dar es Salaam if you are going to use a ferry: Be careful not to use airport or hotel taxis for transportation, not to carry bags to anyone gathered around you at the pier, not to carry large amounts of money, not to take out your phone or wallet, and not to sleep during evening journeys.. If you need to spend time in the city to wait for a plane, you can use the Holiday Inn hotel, which is located in the center and is within walking distance of the pier.. The terrace floor is open until the morning, there is free wi-fi and it is very popular.. Since there are many people who use this place to wait for the plane, they do not mind sitting for hours.
How to Get Zanzibar Visa? / Zanzibar Travel Guide
Does Zanzibar require a visa? Zanzibar requires a visa from Turkish citizens, you need to get a Tanzania visa at the door. Ordinary passport holders can obtain a 90-day single-entry visa for $50. Passport must be valid for more than 6 months. There is also a fee for the green passport, but I could not confirm it.
If you are entering from Zanzibar airport, you have to pay the cashier after filling out 2 forms (one in A4 size and the other in A5) waiting for you at the counters.. You must have a pen and boarding pass with you.. You can make the payment by credit card or cash, but you should come prepared considering the possibility that it will not be accepted in all cases.. Then you go to passport control, your photo is taken and you give fingerprints.. The time varies depending on the crowd, but it took 20 minutes for us to get out of control.
If you came by ferry, it means you already have a Tanzania visa that you got from Dar es Salaam Airport or any land border, you don’t need to deal with visa procedures again, but again. You also go through the passport control at the pier, which can take up to 1 hour.
Currency and Credit Card Usage / Zanzibar Travel Guide
The currency used in Zanzibar is the Tanzanian shilling (TSh or TZS). $1=2315 TSh in July 2020. You can use US dollars in most places across the island. Especially hotels and tours are priced directly in dollars.. Where you can pay both guinea pigs and dollars, it is calculated as $1=2000 TSh, so it is more advantageous to pay in guinea pigs.. Places where you can’t pay other than guinea pigs are gas stations and local markets like pharmacies.. You can have dollars accepted by everyone or anywhere else.
The foreign currency you will exchange at the exchange offices should be dollars, if possible, the printing date should not be older than 2013.. They convert other currencies at much lower rates. As of 2019, all exchange offices are closed.. You can use the exchange office at the airport, local banks or ATMs in Stone Town to exchange Dövic.
I must say that I have not seen an ATM outside of Stone Town; but it is not easy to find. Also, I don’t trust the ATM withdrawal method in Africa, because a friend of ours lost his debit card in Arusha before, and I don’t recommend it to you.
Hotels, restaurants and some tour companies accept payment by credit card, but 5% commission. If you don’t have a shilling, it may be cheaper to get a shilling from a credit card instead of paying in dollars in cash, it is useful to check it according to the exchange rate. While the dollar equivalent of the 10,000 TSh account is normally $4.3, you pay $5 because $1=2000 TSh is calculated at the payment stage, which is 32 TL with the current TL exchange rate.. When a guinea pig is withdrawn from a credit card, you pay 10.500 TSh with commission, it is 30 TL.. In other words, according to the exchange rate, paying with a credit card may be more advantageous than paying with dollars.
Simcard and Internet / Zanzibar Travel Guide
Although almost all hotels and restaurants in the coastal areas of Zanzibar have free Wi-fi, that doesn’t mean you can use it because “This is Africa!”. I’ve only seen the free internet work very well at our hotel in Mchangani.
Zantel is the most widely used operator in Zanzibar. Therefore, if you run out of balance, you can top up even in the most remote village.. The shooting range is quite large, it works even on the deserted sand dunes in the middle of the sea. We hurriedly bought it from the exchange office at the airport, but we later learned that we were well ripped off.. We paid 40.000 TSh ($20) to Simcard with 12 GB internet package valid for 1 week. It turns out that its real value is 12.000 TSh ($6). If you are planning to buy it, try to buy it from the place that gives the closest number.. In addition, during the installation and activation of the package you have chosen, you must have a reliable local with you because there is no English option.
Transportation in Zanzibar / Zanzibar Travel Guide
* Dala Dala
* Dala Dala
Dala dala, which is the only public transportation vehicle in Zanzibar, resembles a minibus when viewed from the front and a pickup truck when viewed from the rear.. Diving is by far the cheapest way of transportation within the island, because prices vary between 300-2000 TSh ($0.15 – $1) depending on the distance.. If you come across a driver who says you have to pay more than that, or even passengers who support the claim, don’t believe it.
If it’s so cheap, why doesn’t it provide transportation to every incoming dala? For example, why have we never used it? One of the busiest means of transport you’ll ever see, you can usually find a man hanging out from the outside.. There is no set departure time, it gets up when it’s full. In Zanzibar, the distances are short but the roads are very bad, so the transportation between the main places takes around 1.5 hours.. It can be used if you have planned a trial or a long vacation once, but if you have a plan where you have time problems, it will be a pain to move around constantly.. Most of all, most of them go too fast and careless.. We did not choose to use it because it did not give us confidence at all.
* Taxi or Private vehicle
Using a taxi for transportation in Zanzibar is an alternative that will both inflate your budget and you will have to bargain constantly because the taximeter none . Also, not all taxis you see are reliable.. You can meet your taxi needs at www.zanzitaksi.com. The approximate amounts you have to pay between certain regions are as follows:
Airport – Nungwi or Kendwa = $50
Airport – Stone Town = $10-$20
Airport – Jambiani side = $50-$60
As of 2019, Oyaa, a taxi driving application similar to Uber. Africa is engaged. It is necessary to have a local line to use it, but you can also consider this alternative.
It will be much more convenient and economical to arrange a vehicle that will provide all your transportation instead of arranging a taxi driver every time, because it will be easier for you to bargain.. Even hiring a guiding driver is best for those with time constraints.. Before I decided to rent a car, I did a detailed driver research from both tripadvisor and our friends who went before, let me share with you:
Fadhil / +255 777 879 107 (Uğur’s manager recommended it). A friend we recommended was also satisfied)
Mohamed Ally / +255 777 418 147 – [email protected]
Tibu / +255 773 107 778
Ased / +255 655 846 082
* Renting a Car or a Motorbike
If you have a travel plan in Zanzibar and want to hang out for a bit of freedom, the best way to go rent a car or motorbike. While we were planning our travel, we were eager to rent a motorbike, but due to the excess of the items we carry with us during the day and the same price as the rental car ($30-$35 per day), we returned to the car.. There are so many details to know about this subject.. Since the traffic flows from the left, Turks do not prefer to rent a car, so I did not want it to be crowded in this article.. You can find more detailed information in the article Renting a Car or Motorbike in Zanzibar.. If you have even the slightest intention, take a look at that article, because I think it is the best method for you to travel around the island as you please.
* Private Tours
Not dealing with any of the above methods does not mean that you will be stuck in the hotel.. Tours are organized for almost all the places to visit in Zanzibar.. If you choose the activities that you will buy through a tour company or hotel, including transportation, they will come and pick you up from your location.. It is more costly, but a comfortable method for those who do not have time to make a long planning before travelling.
* Shuttle Services
Tiny tourist-oriented buses that operate between certain points have also started to become widespread.. You can use it especially to go from Zanzibar airport to the city center or to reach different beaches.. Click here to review and make a reservation.
Tides in Zanzibar / Zanzibar Travel Guide
When you start researching Zanzibar travel, every Zanzibar blog post has a ” you will see the topic “tide”. The sea rises and falls according to the moon’s condition, and this movement is repeated 2 times a day.. The island has no tidal-affected coastlines, only low- and high-affected areas.. It is not an obstacle to swimming as the water withdrawal is a few meters in the less affected areas.. There is a withdrawal of up to 2 kilometers in heavily affected areas, the boats run aground, it becomes impossible to swim.. These tide times are important if you are going to stay in heavily affected areas or join a tour such as Blue Safari.. The times of the tide are different for each day; that is, there is no clear situation as it rises in the morning and withdraws in the evening.. Click here» see the timeline.
Which Area to Stay in Zanzibar? / Zanzibar Travel Guide
* Stone Town
Stone Town, the capital of the island, is a place where you should spend 1 full day. You can visit the places to see in the city center during the day, but I would like you to see the sunset and night of this place.. Boats to Prison Island also leave from here.. Considering that it is not very comfortable to reach the coastal areas where you will swim, it will be much more comfortable to spend at least 1 night in a hotel in Stone Town.. Click for Stone Town hotels»
* Kendwa and Nungwi – POPULAR
Nungwi and Kendwa coast are the most touristic areas in Zanzibar, where the tide is felt the least.. If you want to swim to the fullest at any time of the day, sail with the Dhow (old style sailboat) at sunset, benefit from different restaurant alternatives without being connected to the hotel, be in close contact with many tour companies, see the nightlife of Zanzibar and mingle with the crowd, you can visit your hotel. you can choose from here. But as a disadvantage of all these, I must say that both hotels and restaurants are more expensive here.. Still, these two coastal areas are the best place for a pleasant Zanzibar holiday.
We stayed at the Sunset Kendwa Beach Hotel, which has a beachfront location, four years ago, paying $50 for room+breakfast and we are satisfied. we left by staying. Now the prices are $100. As the name suggests, the sun sets directly in front of you.. The kind that will not leave you hungry with the meals and the cocktails prepared in the bar in the evening.. The breakfast is a bit weak, we should not keep expectations too high about the service because “No hurry in Africa!”. I can recommend it to those who do not care about luxury and some deficiencies in Africa and are looking for affordable travel because the sea in front of them is perfect.. (Booking 7.5/10 , Tripadvisor 3.5/5) Click for more information and reservations»
* Jambiani and Paje – COOL
The two popular beaches, Jambiani and Paje, are located within the 20 km long white beach in the southeast of the island… Don’t mind what I said popular, it is not as crowded and expensive as Nungwi and Kendwa, but I must say that this place is more preferred by tourists compared to the calmness on the remaining beaches.. Although the tide is very heavy in this region, I think it will satisfy the visitors as it offers the expected views from a tropical island.
Jambiani has a village right behind it.. Therefore, you are more involved with the local life here.. The area is generally windy and swimming is very difficult when there is a recession.. It is neither as calm as you are on a deserted island nor is it crowded with tourists.. It is possible to find very high quality restaurants and hotels here.. Click for Jambiani hotels»
Paje is very similar to Jambiani in terms of the features it offers, but with one difference: Kitesurf. Since this is the place for kitesurfers, it is not suitable for swimming even when the sea is high.. Due to many people who know or want to learn sports, we were worried that a kite would fall on our head even while walking on the beach.. There are great places, but if you don’t mind surfing, I wouldn’t recommend staying here.. Click for Paje hotels»
* Kizimkaze – HIPPY
Kizimkaze, the southernmost tip of the island, is famous for its dolphins in the region.. Unlike other coastlines, the coast here is mostly rocky.. I can’t say that it is very suitable for swimming even when the sea is high.. As a result, the number of accommodation places is less and their prices are more affordable.. “We go to other beaches for swimming, I want to relax in nature cheaply.” If you say so, this is the right place.
We spent 4 nights in the last Zanzibar trip at the Promised Land Lodge» located at the farthest point of the island.. As the name suggests, there are small huts for everyone in the greenery, those by the sea have a wonderful view.. Due to being in nature, there may be an insect problem in the rooms, there was also a mouse in ours.. Breakfast consists of fruit and eggs only.. Evening meals are modest but hearty. You can use the hotel’s canoes and bicycles free of charge.. It’s a real “backpacker” place, I think those who travel alone will like it very much.. The only downside is that the sea is very bad. Double room + breakfast from $50. (Booking 8.6/10 , Tripadvisor 4.5/5)
* Pwani Mchangani – ROMANTIC
You’re obsessed with going to Zanzibar for your honeymoon, but if you want a quieter choice without mingling with the crowds in Nungwi, it’s your choice. your place is Pwani Mchangani. It has a beach as long and wide as the southeast coast, likewise the high tide, but calmer, more elite.. Usually there are accommodation alternatives in the form of “resort”. Unless you want, you can have a holiday where you will not meet anyone other than three or five Masaai on the beach.. When the sea recedes, village women appear on the beach to collect seashells. Mnemba Island, which is famous for diving and snorkeling tours, is right across the street.. This means that there is a wide variety of underwater life, but you have to catch the sea without waves.
We spent our four days here at the Mchanga Beach Resort, which has only 15 rooms.. He has a super caring manager, who makes a short visit at dinner and asks if we’re okay. Morning breakfast in the form of a set menu. For dinners, there is a set menu alternative if you want to choose from the menu, and the dishes are really quite successful.. Fresh fruit cocktails are delicious.. Insect spraying is applied to the rooms twice a day.. The beach is very very secluded.. Also the best wi-fi we found in Zanzibar belonged to this hotel. We found the price-service performance quite adequate.. Double room + breakfast from $120. (Booking 8.7/10 , Tripadvisor 4.5/5) Click for more information and reservation.
Health Precautions / Zanzibar Travel Guide
“Is vaccination required for Zanzibar?” If you think so, the answer is: No.. They require the yellow fever vaccine only to people from countries at risk for the disease. When you go to the Travel Health Center, they can vaccinate against yellow fever, but there is no risk on the island, the choice is yours.. BUT; If you are transiting from one of the risky countries such as Kenya, a vaccination certificate is required when you enter the country.
In some sources I read, it was written that there is no longer any risk of malaria on the island, but when we went, one of the locals we talked to said that there was a small risk, that the risk was eliminated by continuous spraying. reported that it was kept to a minimum. Therefore, you may want to take precautions against malaria.. You can find more detailed information on this subject in “Where Are Travel Vaccines Made?” I have given in the article, click to read» I would definitely recommend you to stop by the Travel Health Center before you go, but my personal opinion about the use of malaria medication is that there is no need for Zanzibar.. It is enough to protect yourself from mosquito bites.
Zanzibar is famous for its scorching sun.. “I won’t burn, nothing will happen to me.” don’t say it and make sure to apply your sunscreen cream before going out.. You don’t even realize how you burn, especially in places where there is a lot of wind and white sand.
Avoid street food while traveling to Zanzibar if you have a sensitive stomach. Stale seafood can bore you. Consume this type of food in safe and well-circulated places.. Be careful not to use any water other than closed water.
Safety Precautions / Zanzibar Travel Guide
Theft incidents are very common in Zanzibar, but I don’t think you will have a big problem as long as you act carefully.. You don’t need to be intimidated, this is a place that makes a living from tourism, so events that will undermine this resource are not allowed, but remember that you should always be cautious and alert.
Do not carry large amounts of money and remarkable jewelry.. Try not to look rich to the outside. If possible, leave your passport in a safe place at the hotel and move with its photocopy.. Be sure to hide the valuables you leave at the hotel.
All beaches in Zanzibar are public beaches, so they are open to everyone.. Do not leave your bags or other belongings on the sunbed on the beach and go into the sea.. Extortions are said to be common between Kendwa and Nungwi and on the Paje side.. If possible, do not carry anything with you when you go for a beach walk.. Those who travel alone with their camera may be a target, beware!
You will encounter “beach boys” who are constantly trying to sell you tours in touristic areas.. You can’t imagine how persistent they are! If you’re not really interested, tell them you’ll be back the next morning and you don’t have time to make a new plan.. If you have an activity to buy, bargain for half price, never pay before you leave and keep your expectations low.
In recent years, police bribery has been a little more controlled, but know that not every policeman is reliable.. There will be people trying to sell cannabis in tourist areas, don’t buy it because most of them are in cooperation with the police.
Watch out for coconut trees. Try not to stay under the fruit in case you fall on your head.
Shopping in Zanzibar / Zanzibar Travel Guide
Our case, which is always on the agenda when spending money during a trip to Zanzibar, is bargaining.. No matter how local you go, everyone has a “tourist price”. In fact, the products that are sold at very affordable prices to the locals are sold to tourists at least 3-4 times the price.
The first answer to those who think, “What to buy from Zanzibar?” is spice.. You can buy all kinds of locally produced spices from vanilla sticks to nutmeg, cinnamon sticks to curry from the spice garden tour you attend or from Darajani Market in Stone Town.. Since most spices are available in our country at affordable prices, I give priority to the vanilla bar.. It can be negotiated for a maximum of $2 each.
In my opinion, coffee is also a must.. You can buy Tanzanian coffee beans from the coffee shops in Stone Town.. Our favorite is Zanzibar Coffee House, but Puzzle Cafe has a lot of fans too.
Gzenda (Khanga) Street in Stone Town is home to dozens of souvenir shops. Here you can buy handmade wooden carved trinkets, local fabrics, bags, handmade leather slippers.. I suggest you look at the handmade jewelry from the Masaai you come across on the beaches.. It is forbidden to extract shells and any animal parts (ivory, bovine horns, etc.) from Zanzibar, do not buy them.
Which Season to Visit Zanzibar in?
“When to go to Zanzibar? When is the best season for Zanzibar?” If you think;
July-August-September: Although it is winter, it is Zanzibar’s highest season due to low precipitation.. Especially August is the driest month of the year.. For this reason, all prices can be doubled.. It is also the period when the most abundant fruit grows and underwater life is most abundant.. You should not forget that Zanzibar receives precipitation throughout the year.. Therefore, there is a possibility of encountering rain when you come during this period, you will only come across it less.. It can be said “the best season for Zanzibar.”. It is preferred because it does not rain as much as monsoon time and is considered as another high season.. Those looking for a hot alternative on New Year’s Eve gather here. January and February are the times when the sea seems clearest.. It is ideal for an unforgettable Zanzibar holiday.
October-November: These months are a period when short rains are often encountered.. Temperatures also reach 30 degrees, humidity is high. The sun shines after heavy rains. Whether or not you will have a wet trip depends entirely on luck.
Mid March-April-May-June: If you don’t want to take a vacation without leaving your hotel room, it would not be right to come to Zanzibar during these months because the monsoons time and rains are quite harsh.
Words that will work for you
Native of Zanzibar speaks Swahili, spoken in East Africa but it is very common in English. You will not have communication problems in any of the touristic areas. However, they will love to use the Swahili words you see below in appropriate places.. Words to remember when traveling to Zanzibar:
Jambo = Hello
Caribou = Welcome or welcome (used to replace “you’re welcome”)
Poly poly = Slowly
Ahsante you = Thank you very much.
Sawa = Ok, done
Hakuna matata! = Everything is fine!

You can also visit the Butterfly Center as it’s right on your way.. If you set off early in the morning, you will have done all of these by noon.
– Join a sunset cruise that departs from Kendwa or Nungwi in the afternoon.. It’s amazing to sail with the dhow and watch the sunset.
Latest Tips for Traveling in Zanzibar
– If possible, bring a mask and snorkel in your suitcase, you will benefit a lot while swimming during the day. Mosquito repellent, sunscreen, and a three-way socket converter must be with you.
– Village people in Zanzibar live with limited means in our opinion.. You can bring your unused clothes, mobile phones, giveaways, lighters, sunglasses etc. any small item you can think of and give it to the people here.. Colored pencils and coloring books are good options to delight children.. If you can’t carry any of them, you can even buy a sack of rice on the way to the village.
– You can walk around the beaches in Zanzibar with whatever clothes you want, but local people don’t like to see a lot of cibildak because they are Muslims.. Some villages even have a warning sign at the entrance.. In areas outside the beach, it would be good to have a little coverage of your arms and legs.. Carrying a shawl or sarong with you may be helpful.
– Ramadan may not be very comfortable in Zanzibar.. I advise you to consider it when planning.
