Thanks to the tropical climate of the island and the fertility of the soil, other than black pepper, various spices; With the production of pepper, ginger, cumin, cinnamon and vanilla, the island began to be called the Spice Island in time.
Ivory, black pepper, coconut and slave trade has represented the strength of the Zanzibar economy. Zanzibar is the richest in East Africa, thanks to its vegetation and various spices, and has hosted the world’s largest clove production.
Second day in Zanzibar Spice Tour – We combined it as Prison Island. There are spice gardens all over the island.. We entered one of them.
With the participation of the guide and a young man from the farm, all spices were introduced and how they were grown, respectively.. Now, since we think that it is not necessary to explain all of them one by one, we only want to talk about spices and herbs that seem different to us.. In addition, since April is the dead season, many spices did not grow during this period, which prevented us from seeing these spices.
Spices grown respectively;

Clove; We know that it is good for teeth, but we did not know that it is good for stomachache, we learned it.
Muzungu Banana – Red Banana: This kind of banana, which is healthier and more delicious than the yellow banana we know, Contains carotene and vitamin C.
Black Pepper: Grows on ivy. Its color is green, and the color gets darker as it matures.
Langi Langi: Essence of Chanel Coco No.5 perfume. It is a plant from India.
Achiote Aca Lipstick Fruit : It was as if it was the same Rambutan fruit that we ate so fondly in the Far East. Yes, it looks exactly the same, but it has kernels with small grains inside.. By smashing these seeds with your finger and popping each core, crimson paint emerges.. That’s why they call it natural lipstick.
We witnessed how the coconut tree was climbed, we felt the need to explain it because it was quite interesting to us.. The boy who was traveling with us tied a rope thick to his feet and climbed up to the very top of the tree in sweat and took our coconuts.. He cut them all with great skill so that we could go down and drink.
A small counter was set up at the end of the spice round.. It is possible to find all kinds of spices in small packages, as well as pineapple, vanilla, jasmin essences.. If you are going to shop, fill your cart with what you want to buy instead of asking for prices one by one and bargain collectively.. We paid $45 for 4 essences and 15 spices.
After returning to Istanbul, we used these spices in a few dishes we made and it gave a wonderful taste.. If you like spices in food, definitely get them.
After completing our tour, they introduced spices so much, now it’s time to taste them.. We were guests in a local house, the lady of the house prepared our meals before we arrived, put them one by one in lidded storage containers, prepared our ground table and was waiting for us.. We ate very delicious food. In fact, there is no shortage of food in Africa, the only problem is the unhygienic environments where meals are made.
A good example in terms of describing the kitchen hygiene, where the delicious food we eat is made
We have come to the end of our spice tour. As we decided with our guide Adam to distribute a suitcase of clothes that we brought with us from Istanbul, we set out for a child welfare institution established in 2010.. First we got our permission to go inside and distribute the items.
The woman in charge of the children called them to a large hall and asked us to give them in order.. It was a different and indescribable experience for us to distribute all the clothes and food in order, to be able to make tens of familyless children happy and to make them feel that they are worth a little bit.
Our half-day tour thus ended and now it’s time to go to Prison Island.SummaryArticle NameZANZİBAR ISLAND SPICE TOURDescriptionWe combined our second day in Zanzibar as Spice Tour – Prison Island.
