Identified with romance, canals, gondolas, honeymoon, ice cream and many more beautiful things, Venice is located in the Veneto region covering the northeast of Italy. is the capital. information about Venice, Where is Venice, Venice’ you need for Venice trip, which is one of the indispensables of Italy travel I hope that my Venice travel guide, which contains information such as transportation, Venice hotels, what to buy in Venice, will be useful for your travel..
A city built on 118 islands separated by canals. There are 400 bridges and a total of 170 canals connecting the islands.
Venice is considered the region located in the Venetian lagoon as the center Venice and its surroundings.. Central Venice is also known as historical Venice and this island will be the place you come to see for touristic purposes.. When considered in a broad sense, other places in the lagoon such as Mestre, Lido, Murano, Burano are included in the city of Venice.. Mestre is located on the boot-shaped mainland of Italy; The other ones I counted are islands like central Venice.. (For information on the islands, see: ISLANDS AROUND VENICE)
The first city that comes to mind when we say canals is Venice, so other cities with canals are called “Venice of…” (see BANGKOK: Venice of the Far East). So what is a channel? Canal is the name given to waterways made by people for purposes such as irrigation or transportation.. Stagnant waters that do not flow quickly are considered suitable for canal construction.
The entire island of Venice is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and is under protection.. In addition, since it is closed to land traffic, transportation is provided only by sea vehicles.. The name of the vehicle you will see and hear most will be the water bus vaporetto (plural: vaporetti).
Turkish citizens with normal passports can enter Italy with Schengen visa, green passport holders are exempt from visa application.
Venice time is 1 hour behind Turkey.
As you can imagine, tourism is the main source of income in the city.. The average number of tourists per day is around 60,000 and there is a tourist frenzy that even this number in one day is more than the resident population of Venice.. For information about must-see places, you can check out my VENICE TO VISIT article.
When to go to Venice?
Considered the most romantic city in Europe Of course, it is inevitable that Venice is full of tourists at all times of the year.. In my opinion, the best times to go are May and September-October; because the remaining months coincide with at least one of the times when the crowd will increase even more, such as New Year’s Eve, carnival period, Valentine’s Day, Easter, summer period, before Christmas.. But; The Venice Carnival is world-famous, and especially if you are not after romance, I recommend you to experience that carnival spirit by going in February when the carnival is held.. I went to Venice twice in 2009 and 2015; they were both carnival periods For detailed information about carnival, you can check my article VENICE CARNIVAL.
The temperature in July and August, which are the hottest months, is around 23 degrees.. January is the coldest month and the average temperature is 3 degrees.
Especially if you go in winter, you may come across the ‘city flooding’ they call Acqua Alta. It sounds interesting, but the people of the city built on canals, who live together with water, consider this normal and continue their lives.. Already, the sirens that inform the situation are ringing and information messages are coming to the phones of the locals.. Transportation was also continuing, only in some places vaporettos had to change routes.. Unfortunately, I missed this event by one day when I went on February 7, 2015. When I went, the waters receded and everything was back to normal.
Culture buffs can go by checking the dates of the Venice Biennale (La Biennale di Venezia), the oldest biennale in the world. The Architecture Biennale is held in years ending in even numbers, and the Art Biennials are held in years ending in odd numbers.. You can view it here. For those who are curious, the Film Festival can also be visited, you can check by searching for Venice Film Festival as the dates change every year.. Let me also note that the Film Festival was not held in central Venice, but on the Lido Island.
How long to stay in Venice?
Venice is a small city; All of them can be easily visited by walking and, where necessary, by boating, so 2-3 days are sufficient for a touristic trip.. If you want to experience the unique romance of the city, explore its quiet corners, get lost in its streets and find peace by sitting in its cafes, you can spare longer time.
ACCOMMODATION – Venice Hotels
I have detailed my Venice hotel recommendations due to many questions, please review my article WHERE TO STAY IN VENICE.
VENUE TRANSPORTATION
The Marco Polo Airport in Venice is located in Mestre on the mainland. Direct flights from Turkey are also made to this airport, and a direct flight from Istanbul takes about 2 hours.
Transport from Venice Airport
If the place where you are staying if the center is in Venice; Although there are different methods of transportation from the airport, do not get confused, I guess you do not want to get off one vehicle and get on the other with your suitcases.. Buy your airport-central ticket from Alilaguna company for 25 Euros round trip from the following address, it is 2 Euros more convenient than buying there when you go.. When the payment is confirmed, a voucher is sent to your e-mail address and you print it out and turn it into a ticket at the Alilaguna box office at the airport.. You can also get on the vehicle with that ticket.. this is exactly how i did it. If you are not sure, of course, you can get your ticket from there by consulting the Alilaguna box office at the airport when you go.
Alilaguna’s watercraft, I think they are annoying as they go incredibly slow They have three different lines, you can check which line has the closest stop to your accommodation on the map (the ticket you buy does not change according to the lines). The closest to mine was the San Zaccaria stop on the Linea Blu (blue line) and it took about 75 minutes to get here.. After all, the next stop, San Marco, becomes the heart of the center.
There are also tickets between the airport and Lido on the Alilaguna page I shared the link of.. If your accommodation is in Lido, you can get your ticket for the same price from the same page.. If you are going to stay in Mestre, it is possible to take a bus as you do not have to cross the waterway.
If you are coming to Venice from another country in Europe using low-cost airlines ( Ryan Air, Wizz Air, Transavia) instead of Marco Polo Airport, you may land at Treviso Airport, which is 25 km from Venice. In this case, you can buy your one-way bus ticket for 10 Euros and a two-way bus ticket for 18 Euros and reach the Piazzale Roma station in central Venice in about an hour.. By the way, the same buses stop in Mestre, it seems that there is no problem for those who are staying there.. You can check the hours for both directions here (English version does not open, click on the blue box opposite which direction you want to go). Tickets can be bought inside the bus.
Venice City Transportation
I told you that land vehicles are not allowed to enter Central Venice and transportation is provided by water.. Apart from that, you have to walk a lot, walk anyway so that you can explore the city thoroughly.. What makes your job difficult is that you will get lost a lot while trying to find the place you want to go due to the helplessness of helpful solutions such as internet and gps; Unfortunately, location services cannot detect narrow side streets.. Well, the pleasure of getting lost in Venice is another
As for the ticket thing, one way ticket is 7.5 Euros and there are variants for different number of days. But if your accommodation is not in a very remote place or you do not have a problem with walking, you will not use it much anyway.. Tickets are scanned and boarded at the machines at the entrance (ticket validation); so anyone who says they won’t get caught can try their luck (except for the airport, there is an attendant there). Of course, there is a penalty of 52 Euros if you get caught, it’s up to you whether you want to gamble like this.
SHOPPING IN VENICE – What to Buy in Venice?
If you have allocated a considerable budget for shopping, your job is very easy anyway, since it is a very touristic city, you will find shops selling items for tourists all over the place.. In addition, luxury Italian brands such as Versace, MaxMara, Gucci, Armani, Prada and Louis Vuitton will be waiting for you.
There’s a lot you can get even if your budget isn’t that high. You can find quality clothing and leather goods such as bags, shoes, wallets at local boutiques.. All you have to keep in mind is that the farther you get from St. Mark’s Square, the more likely the prices will decrease.
Considering what to buy for Venice, of course, Venetian masks come first.. If you came during the carnival period, the ground will already be full of masks; but at other times masks are sold both for wearing on the face and hanging on the wall.. The simplest masks that cover the two eyes we know start from 3 Euros, and the flashy masks that cover the whole face are around 25 Euros.. There are also more expensive ones according to criteria such as being handcrafted or produced from quality materials.
Glass products come second after masks as souvenirs. The glasses of Murano, an island in the Venetian region, are world-famous, so you will often see the inscription “Murano Glass” while browsing.. If you want to buy real Murano glass, don’t forget to ask for the certificate to make sure it’s not made in China.
All of what I’ve mentioned is a product that you come across while browsing and inspires confidence in both price and quality. you can get it from anywhere. I haven’t seen so many souvenir shops in any other city, I don’t think you will have a hard time.. I also recommend you to stop by the Rialto Bazaar of the famous Rialto Bridge.
VENICE FOOD & DRINK – What to Eat in Venice?
Although we all think of delicious pasta, pizza, lasagna and risotto when we say Italian cuisine, Venice is unfortunately one of Italy’s weakest links when it comes to food.. As expected from an extremely touristic place; Their prices are high, and their quality and portions are small.
Nowhere else in Europe have I seen beer sell for 3 Euros, even in grocery stores (50 Cent in Vienna for example) or 10 Euros for 250 ml of white wine in a regular restaurant, but Such is the situation in Venice. Main courses such as lasagna, pasta, pizza, seafood risotto around 10 – 20 Euros. Venice’s famous food is pasta made with cuttlefish and risotto, try it if you want.
By the way, most restaurants charge both the cover charge and the cover charge. (between 2 – 5 Euros per person) and also add a service fee of 8% – 12.5%. These are also effective in making the account high.
If you are wondering where to find cheap food in Venice, you should not sit in restaurants and prefer the method of eating standing up.. Locals usually do that too.. Slices of pizza cost around 2-3 Euros and they are delicious.. Did you eat three slices and take a beer with you for less than 10 Euros? try. It consists of ingredients such as white wine, soda, lemon, olive and has different varieties.. Prepared with well-known and popular Italian liqueurs such as Aperol or Campari, Spritz starts from 2 Euros per glass.
Even if you go to Venice in winter, you should eat the famous Italian ice creams.. I ate coldly with my gloves in hand Three scoops of ice cream are sold for 4 – 5 Euros.
EXTRA INFORMATION
Do you like Dan Brown’s books? I recommend you to read his book Inferno (Original title: Inferno) before going to Venice.. In the part of the book that takes place in Venice, the story of the city, basilica and horses is explained in detail (For those who have limited time and cannot read the whole book; p.. In 371, Robert Langdon and Sienna arrive in Venice, where the city begins to be described). In fact, part of the poem that our heroes need to decipher reads:
“Search for the traitorous Venetian duchy,
He cut off the heads of the horses …”
As I mentioned, the next stop in the book is Istanbul, as the horses were brought from Istanbul.
394 in this book by Dan Brown. Let me quote a short section on the page (I said above that one of the statues has no legs):
“… Horses of St. Mark’s. Like many treasures in Venice, these four priceless horses, which looked as if they were about to jump into the square below at any moment, were looted from Istanbul during the Crusades.. Another looted piece of art stood under the horses in the southwest corner of the church: a purple porphyry known as the Tetrarch.. The statue was known for its broken leg when it was brought from Istanbul in the thirteenth century.. In the 1960s, the foot was miraculously found in Istanbul.. Venice made a request for the missing piece of the statue, and the Turkish authorities replied with a simple message: You stole our statue, we are not giving the foot.”
Well said Turkish officials, isn’t it

We call flirtatious men “casanova” or we hear it said so around us. There was even a song called “Foolish Casanova” by Petek Dinçöz, you remember Have you ever wondered where this name comes from?
This flirtatious person whose full name is Giovanni Giacomo Casanova, was born in Venice in 1725. He also has many different titles such as soldier, diplomat, writer, gambler, adventurer.. Although he was described as very smart and talented by the people he met, he had to leave or be fired from wherever he went after a while due to his indomitable personality.. When he came back to his hometown of Venice at the age of 30, he was arrested for his interest in witchcraft and put in Piombi, the famous prison near the Palace of the Dukes.
Piombi Prison, which means lead Although the roof of ‘s is made of lead so that no one can reach the ceiling and escape, our clever and talented womanizer finds a way to escape from here, and this escape is told as one of the most famous escape stories in history.. After the escape, Casanova continued his life with travels, gambling and women.. His stories are still known today because he wrote his life (autobiography) before he died, there is even a 2005 movie called Casanova, if you’re interested, you can watch this movie that also shows Venice.
Casanova, who has lived countless love stories with women, was not a classic womanizer, contrary to popular belief (I am a liar of what I have read ) He passionately fell in love with and valued every woman he was with, cared for them to be happy and satisfied in every way. In fact, it is rumored that he said, “I loved women, but I loved my freedom more than them” and that he could not connect with any woman because of his fondness for freedom.
