MARKEN Economic Travel Guide
Places to see while in Amsterdam
If you’re going on a three or four day trip to Amsterdam, you should definitely take a day off to visit Marken.. Most people miss this city, but in our opinion, no trip to Amsterdam is a complete trip without seeing Marken and Volendam.. Located very close to Amsterdam and at a very accessible point, this touristic fishing town is located in the north of the Netherlands.
Quiet, calm, clean, like a clean picture. this is a town. Located on an island, Marken was badly damaged by frequent floods and the people living here built their homes on an artificial hill they built to protect themselves.. Since fishing is the main source of income, the population has also increased.
HOW TO GET TO MARKEN: HOW TO GET TO MARKEN?
You can reach this city, which is 25 km away from Amsterdam, by bus or by your own vehicle in a very practical way.
By vehicle: From Amsterdam you can reach Marken by following the A10 highway and then the N47 to Monnickendam and then the N518. If you have rented a car, make sure it has GPS.. You can click here to read our blog post where we share our experiences and advice on driving in Europe.
By bus: You should take the bus number 315 from Amsterdam Central station.
By sea: We recommend that those who will come to this town on the island from Volendam prefer a ferry, especially in summer.
MARKEN IN CITY TRANSPORTATION
Marken is a place where you will spend maybe half an hour in total. After reaching here with your private car, you can reach the center on foot after parking your car in the car park, which is a little outside of the city but still only five minutes away from the center by walking.
ACCOMMODATION IN MARKEN: WHERE TO STAY IN MARKEN?
We did not stay here as we took a day tour to Marken on our Amsterdam trip. Frankly, we do not think that the tourists who come here spend a night, but if you came to this town late and you want to stay here for the night, you can compare and choose your alternatives on booking.com.
THINGS TO DEFINITELY DO IN MARKEN
Walking: The ideal activity to do in Marken would be to explore this small town on foot. While walking along the beach and among the tree houses, you’ll feel like you’re on a movie set or in a photograph.
Marken Lighthouse: Paard van Marken (Horse of Marken) must see
Marken Museum: This museum, where you will find Marken traditional handicrafts and clothing, is built on six old fishermen’s houses.
WHAT TO EAT IN MARKEN? WHAT TO DRINK?
Of course, we recommend you to eat seafood in Marken, a fishing town like Volendam. You can eat fish & chips at “Spaander Restaurant”, sit on the terrace and watch the scenery and people.
SHOPPING AT MARKEN
A few shops where you can buy traditional Dutch accessories, ornaments, and souvenirs are lined up on your walking route.. You can choose the souvenirs sold here as they are more affordable than Amsterdam.
MARKEN CITY TOUR
In Marken, which is a paradise, you will reach the center after a five-minute walk after you leave your car in the parking lot or after you get off the public transportation vehicle.. On the way to the pedestrian walkway along the beach, you will pass between brown and green tree houses.. You can spend as much time as you want among these houses and take pictures, but we recommend you to be quiet and not disturb the environment. You can reach the port by continuing through the shops and restaurants lined up by the sea. After seeing the lighthouse, you can take a lunch break anywhere, or you can have a drink on the terrace of a cafe and watch the view.
MARKEN ENTERTAINMENT AND NIGHTLIFE
In the name of nightlife, you will not find a nightclub or disco-style venue here. For a more quiet meal, you can go to restaurants or sip a drink in front of the view at a bar.. Destination for a crazy night: Amsterdam
