The fairytale village of Santa Claus and the reindeer, covered with snow like cotton, Lapland is also popular in Turkey, thanks to tour companies that have organized a Lapland tour lately. started to happen. The tour prices, which are high due to the expensiveness of the northern countries, can create question marks in the minds of some travelers even though they want to go there very much.. We organized a Lapland trip with my wife and I got a lot of questions about Lapland holiday prices on my lifeveseyahat instagram account where I shared our trip.. Therefore, in this article, I will detail where and how much we spend for Lapland vacation and some price information that can answer your questions such as Is Lapland expensive. I will also provide northern lights (glass-top igloo hotels) with prices and information and share hotel recommendations.
So that I can help you decide whether to go to Lapland and, if you do, ‘by yourself or by tour’.. First I add a graph of how much we spend, then we’ll go over each item individually.
We went in January 2018, since there is no inflation in Europe, prices do not change much on a yearly basis.. The important thing is the month information, although the beginning of January is still high season, the peak season is the second half of December.
Lapland Hotel Prices – Hotel Recommendations
Due to the times of our flight tickets, we had to stay in a hotel close to Helsinki Airport (airport code HEL) for one night both on the way out and on the way back.. Unlike many people, I did not spend extra time on the Helsinki trip, since I have visited Helsinki before.
(Note: By clicking on the hotel names I have mentioned throughout the article, you can be directed to booking.com pages and view customer comments. You can book the one you like by reading and reviewing the prices.)
If you have to stay in Helsinki due to the long transfer time of the Lapland plane, you can try Forenom Hostel Vantaa Airport as we did, The price of a double room is around 50 Euros per night.. Those looking for a little more comfort should choose the Hilton Helsinki Airport hotel.
If you haven’t seen it before, Helsinki’ See also, of course, then it would make more sense to stay in hotels in the city center instead of the airport.. Click for Helsinki city center hotels.
Outside of the compulsory two-night Helsinki, we booked a 3-night stay for the Lapland trip, including 2 nights in Lapland and 2 nights in Helsinki (Total 290 Euros). I did not include the ice hotel accommodation where we stayed for one night; I explain everything about the ice hotel separately at the end of the article.
Lapland hotels Your first choice should be. Since it fills up very quickly, you need to make a reservation immediately: Santa Claus Holiday Village
Because when Places to visit in Lapland is said, this area is meant. Hotel prices are generally between 200 – 250 Euros including the sauna.
If you want to see the northern lights from my warm bed without freezing in the cold, if you say that you have a special hotel experience and are lucky, when you come to Lapland
strong>Lapland igloo hotels will be for you. The igloo hotels close to the attractions are as follows, each one more wonderful than the next:
Arctic Treehouse Hotel
Santa’s Igloos Arctic Circle
Glass Resort
Nightly in winter season (northern lights season) For hotels starting at 400 Euros, make sure you choose a partially glassed room like Aurora cabin or Glass House, because that’s what is called an igloo/igloo/iglu hotel.
First I suggested Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi as an accommodation option and told the best looking options from both regular and igloo hotel options.. Of course, staying close to the attractions will make your job much easier, especially for families with children.
The second accommodation option is hotels that focus on the northern lights rather than places to visit.. The previous option does not fit the northern lights because you cannot see the northern lights clearly where there are city lights.. Therefore, you need to move away from the touristic center towards dark places as soon as the caravan passes.
I have compiled the best igloo hotels in Lapland below, thinking that you will want to have a special experience again, prices are again It starts from 400 Euros and has different options such as breakfast and dinner included.. Let me start with the hotels near Ivalo Airport (IVR) which we didn’t go but because it is further north, there is a higher probability of seeing the northern lights.. So if it is convenient for you to buy a ticket to this airport from your destination in Helsinki or Europe, you can consider the following hotels. If you can’t find it and you’re going to reach Rovaniemi Airport by landing, you’ll have to travel for about 4 hours, and that’s it.. The hotel you choose will help you with transportation options.
Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort – The most famous and most expensive igloo hotel, the pictures of which you see when it comes to igloo hotel. (Photo above is from this hotel’s website)
Wilderness Hotel Inari & Igloos
Wilderness Hotel Muotka & Igloos
Aurora Village Ivalo
“I want to stay at the igloo hotel, but if it happens in the tourist center, the northern light There are igloo options close to Rovaniemi Airport for those who say “You said you’d lose your chance, and these hotels are too far away”, Lapland is by far the place that offers the most options for igloo hotel experience. Let me write them now, staying in these hotels is very convenient both to be calm for the northern light and to go to the nearby tourist center (Santa Claus village) during the day and return in the evening.. The distance between this touristic center and Rovaniemi Airport is extremely close, only 5 km.
Arctic Snow Hotel & Glass Igloos – We stayed here for one night, but we preferred the ice part of the hotel, not the igloo part of the hotel You do not have a cold experience You look for igloos, they are among the closest igloo hotels to the city.. Rovaniemi Airport 35 km.
Apukka Resort – Couldn’t be closer to Rovaniemi Airport, I think it’s 12 km.
Arctic Fox Igloos – looks 92 km from Rovaniemi Airport.
Of course you will find different igloo hotels nearby, you start your search by clicking on a hotel and finally you come to a decision.
If you say “Iglo hotels are nice but over my budget”, that’s fine too.. Depending on whether you want to be close to the touristic center or to the secluded corners where the northern lights are visible, press the name of a hotel and check the prices of the nearby hotels with the ‘show map’ option on the page that opens.
The most budget friendly but in terms of accommodation The option that doesn’t have a feature is to stay in the city center like us and try to comply with the hours of the 8th bus and complete your trip by going to Santa Claus Village with that bus (because there is not much to see in the place I call the city center). Or a taxi can also be used, since it is a small place, the one-way taxi fare will probably not exceed 25 Euros.. We have combined the expensive but special options above as 1 night plus the normal cheap hotel option.
The guesthouse outa, where we stayed at 85 Euros per night, was below the Lapland average for 2 nights. we chose there for the night, like the Helsinki airport hotel and the ice hotel, it also had a shared toilet, but it was not a problem.. Again, by clicking on the map, I say try to find the hotel that suits you.
How long to stay in Lapland I think 4 nights is ideal, I think 3 nights but we were only able to complete it by making 4 full days (arriving early in the morning and returning late in the evening). It was an unforgettable experience, but of course, sleeping at minus 5 degrees may not be suitable for everyone.
Lapland Flight Ticket Prices and Transportation in Lapland
After detailing the subject of hotels, which are likely to constitute the biggest expense item and offer a unique experience such as staying in a glass igloo and watching the northern lights from your warm bed if you’re lucky, let’s look at transportation now.. In the transportation part, I included the expenses we made for plane tickets and city transportation in Lapland (Total 649 Euros).
How to get to Lapland is generally a connecting flight from Helsinki, as I mentioned above, we spent one night each because of the long transfer time.. I also said that the name of the airport where you need to search for a flight ticket for your final destination is Rovaniemi Airport (RVN) and in exceptional cases Ivalo Airport (IVR), is your priority now to travel or to maximize your luck with the northern lights?
Tour companies selling Lapland tours can arrange direct flights via Istanbul-based Freebird Airlines, but this is not the case since it is a private flight. It seems unlikely that you can arrange it on your own with a direct flight.
We bought Lapland flight tickets from Munich for 290 Euros per person for the beginning of January. If you follow the campaigned flights in Turkey, flight tickets for a similar price I think you can find. Although we Turks go to Lapland mostly for its fairy-tale environment and snow landscapes, Europeans go to see Santa Claus with their children in Rovaniemi, known as Santa Claus Village.. That’s why I don’t recommend you to go during the period from the second half of December, when the Christmas holiday starts, to New Year’s Day in Europe, flight ticket and hotel prices will be very high.
As I explained in the hotel section, we did not stay around the Santa Claus village where there are touristic activities, so every day we went there by bus from the city center. As of January 2018, the bus ticket was 3.90 euros one way and 7.20 euros round trip.. On the way to and from the airport, we had to use a taxi because the bus times did not match.. Airport – Santa Claus Village 11.50 euros and city center – airport 25 euros by taxi. Taxi opening tariff was 9 Euros.
Tip: If you click on the booking.com page that opens when you click on the hotels, if there is a free airport shuttle service below them, you can take advantage of this service. Email the hotel for.
Lapland Food Prices
Our thoughts on food expenses were to eat something like a sandwich that we prepared in the morning before leaving the hotel, to taste the famous dishes outside at noon and to prepare it at the hotel in the evening.. So the fact that the amount we pay for the food is low compared to the others is entirely our extra effort (Total 87 Euros)
We paid attention when making the reservation that the Helsinki airport hotel and guesthouse in Lapland, the link of which I gave above, would have microwave, kettle and kitchen utensils.. We took bread, cheddar cheese, tea, pasta, pasta sauce, instant soup and wafer-style things called protein bar with us (It can be bought there when you go, but it was easier to take it with us). We also bought water once and filled the water bottle afterwards and used it throughout the trip. Tap water is drinkable in Lapland.
Famous Lapland dishes We tried the venison and salmon ingredients, which were also included, and got snacks in between.. In terms of giving an idea; Salmon soup = 10 Euros, venison burger = 16 Euros, salmon = 22 Euros (prices for one each).
Lapland Safari Prices
Yes, we come to the topic that is most likely to occupy the most Lapland holiday prices. Deer safari and husky safari were enough for us (Total 552 Euros), the other most popular safaris are Snowmobile safari (riding a snowmobile), Ice fishing (fishing in a frozen lake and cooking and eating if you catch it), Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) safari and Ice floating. (entering the frozen lake with special clothes).
Safari prices in Lapland vary widely.. Although there are no big price differences between companies, the length of the safari is the main criterion affecting the price.. If you want to make the shortest ones, you can try both in Santa Claus Village where you will spend all your time, there are Reindeer Park (Deer Park) and Husky Park sections.
Let’s start with the deer safari; If you want to try the shortest version, it says 400 meters (5 minutes) for 18 Euros and 1000 meters (15 minutes) for 29 Euros.. One of the experiences I wanted to have the most during my Lapland trip was to dive deep into the forest with the reindeer and enjoy the snow-covered postcard-like environment for as long as possible, so I didn’t choose these short tours, which I thought would end immediately after I got on and took two pictures.
Even though the safari duration is 3.5 hours, the important thing is the ride duration, you need to pay attention to it. Because the duration of the safari includes transfers from your hotel, information, hot drinks and cookies after the safari.. We opted for the 1-hour deer safari, the longest option offered and it cost 125 Euros per person.. Everything I mentioned above is included in the price, even thermal overalls are usually included, but we were not given it.
For those who say ‘I’ll take a look and go out’ in the Husky safari, the price is like 40 Euros for a 2km ride and 75 Euros for a 5km ride. There are options, you can check it here. We chose the longest one again and bought the safari, which is 12-17 km long (1.5-2 hours driving time), for 151 Euros per person.. For me, these two safaris were the most important things for my Lapland vacation; That’s why I didn’t cut down on these expenses while I was there.. Unlike the deer safari, the safari firm also provided thermal overalls, ski masks and gloves, since huskies run fast and will be colder with the effect of the wind; I put the jumpsuit on one more layer under my coat and put the ski mask under my beanie to protect the sides of my face.
Now, going one step beyond the price issue, Lapland safaris.
I suggest you pay attention to the safari hours in addition to the driving length.. For example, for some reason, they always put deer safaris in the afternoon, whereas when we went, it was around 14:00 at sunset (you can check it from your smartphone’s weather app).. In other words, a safari that starts at noon can mean that you will do the safari when it is dark, if you want to experience that magical white environment like me, it may be more logical to choose the daytime ones.. I found only Sieriporo Safaris company that organizes the deer safari during the day, and we made an agreement with Safartica, one of the most famous companies for husky safari.
Finally; When I look at the safaris on the internet, it says there is no place and buy it in advance, but I did not make a reservation before I went.. There is a building called Safari Center in Santa Claus Village, I went there as soon as I arrived so I could arrange safaris for the next days.. If you do not prefer to buy from the internet, I recommend you to do it as soon as you go, because not every safari is every day and there may not be room during busy periods.. Apart from the Safari Center I mentioned, many places such as the reception of the hotel I recommend as the ‘hotel you should stay’ in the same place and the tourist info office in the city center will support you, safaris are not so hard to find.. Just don’t leave it to the last minute.
While you learned the most important information about safaris during the Lapland trip, that is, in the heat, in the video below I told you.
Unfortunately, when we were there, it was very clear that the northern lights would not be seen, since the weather was always cloudy and snowy, otherwise it would be from northern lights safaris. we would also get. SMS services that notify you of the northern lights are between 15 – 20 Euros, if there is a possibility of seeing it, you can ask where you will stay or where you take a safari.. Even though we couldn’t see it, the beautiful Northern Lights views were formed the day after we returned, it’s a matter of luck.. You won’t be disappointed if you go by thinking ‘what if it’s okay’ as we did.. Because there is no definite answer to the question when the northern lights are seen, if I were to go to Lapland for that reason, I would prefer February or March instead of January.
Other safari prices we haven’t tried: Ice floating 90 Euro, Northern Lights 125 Euro, Snowmobile 129 Euro (90 min), Ice Fishing around 90 Euro. It is also possible to combine different options together.
Touristic Expenditures – Shopping in Lapland
Shopping in the touristic expenditures section and has become a Lapland classic I have added the costs of ‘sending cards to loved ones from the Santa Claus post office’ which is. We also got the Culture Pass, which is 20 Euros per person and allows you to enter all three of the Arktikum Museum, Pilke Science Center and Korundi House of Culture buildings.. It’s not because we love museums, but you can’t stay outside for a long time because of the cold, if you say let’s go to the cafe, eating and drinking is more expensive.. We thought we’d see a few of the places to visit in Bari and warm up in the meantime. It might be nice to visit a museum in , at least to spend time in a warm place, this is the Arktikum Museum.
The people who follow my articles know that I don’t like shopping and because I travel with a backpack. I don’t buy much from the places I go. Magnet was 5 Euros, I bought one. Sending a card (card + stamp) for each of your loved ones from the Santa Claus post office is around 2.5 Euros.. Apart from the Culture Pass, we spent some money on them (Total 67 Euros).
Buying a picture you took with the famous Santa Claus is exactly 30 Euros! As I’ve told you so far, it seemed like fraud to me that they wanted to charge that much for a painting even though we paid the world’s money for everything (because they knew that Europeans came for Santa Claus) and I chose not to buy it.. If you want to buy it to be a good memory, an additional 30 Euros will be added to your costs.. It is 80 Euros to buy everything, including the pictures and the video taken from the moment you enter the Santa Claus, you can also buy it later on the internet with the number given to you.. I was content with downloading the frozen versions from the internet for free, I think it’s a memory
Lapland Ice Hotel Experience
Veee as you can see I haven’t said anything yet about the ice hotel, which has the biggest place among our expenses.. In fact, although I could distribute the expenses there to the relevant parts such as transportation, accommodation and meals, I did not prefer it; because it is an experience that many people going to Lapland would not prefer, the spending figures could be misleading.
If you say what is this ice hotel; We stayed one night in the ice part of the hotel called Arctic Snow Hotel & Glass Igloos There are different hotel options in both ice hotel and igloo concepts in Lapland, we decided here.. Because ice hotels melt every summer, they are rebuilt in the winter.. If you go during a period when the Northern Lights are likely to be seen, it would be great to stay in the igloos, which are designed with glass ceilings and the links of the best ones I have given above, and they are not cold inside
My ‘before I die’ I tried it because my bucketlist is to sleep in a room made of snow one night, and I slept for 8 hours, even though I woke up from time to time to freeze my nose, which was the only place I had left open.. The conditions of the hotel, whose temperature is minus 5 degrees, are definitely not for princes and princesses, but it was a great experience for me. Now let’s take a look at the Snow Hotel (ice hotel) costs one by one (Total 656 Euros):
– One night stay in a double suite room 350 Euros
– Transportation to the hotel is from 15 Euros per person one way to 60 Euros for two people round trip, they have their own private shuttles
– 90 minute Finnish sauna (Finnish sauna) + hot tube (open air jacuzzi) + snow sauna (it is called snow sauna because it is in a room made of snow like a hotel) 130 Euros for two people
– Soup + main course + dessert dinner in the ice restaurant of the ice hotel named Ice restaurant for two people 116 Euros
Now let’s wrap it up. We paid 1645 Euros excluding ice hotel and 2301 Euros including ice hotel for this trip of 5 nights and 4 days, 3 nights in Lapland and 2 nights in Helsinki.. If we thought that instead of the ice hotel, we normally spend a day on accommodation, food and beverage, transportation and also try the famous Finnish sauna elsewhere, we can say that a Lapland trip budget similar to ours would be around 2000 Euros, all inclusive for two people.. You can roughly calculate your own budget based on the information I have provided, based on the flight ticket you find and the hotel prices you want to stay in.
Additional notes;
– Safari and bus ticket prices are generally discounted for children.
– I did not mention it because it is not a Lapland trip, but if you do not have suitable clothes for very cold regions, you should also allocate a good budget for thermal and snow clothes before the trip. will need. “How to dress for a trip to Lapland?” I’ve included my video below.
