“This is a town that smells like Italy.. Warm, friendly, peaceful. Pink bougainvillea surrounds the houses, the cats are playing as usual, an old couple passes me. Woman hugging her husband’s arm tightly, they’re in their 70s, maybe more. They slowly walk towards their home.. Wouldn’t it envy you to spend your life in such a beautiful town and live together in peace? The Garda Lake, waving slightly in front of me, almost reminds me of the Bosphorus.. It’s so big that I don’t have the language to call it a lake.. I loved you Sirmione… You know, as they say, ‘It is better to see once than to hear a thousand times’, I saw it and I am glad that I added a new one to my list”
Our Verona trip we spent the second day exploring Lake Garda and Sirmione Town. While we were in Verona, we decided not to miss this opportunity and set off early in the morning.. If you happen to be in Verona, I would definitely add Garda and Sirmione to your list.. We went to Lake Garda by train from Verona and took the ferry to visit Sirmione Town from there.. However, I would like to discuss the transportation routes in more detail for those who want to go.
How to Get to Lake Garda?
Lake Garda It has the distinction of being the largest lake in Italy. You understand this much better when you see Garda. If you show it to someone who doesn’t know, you can easily make them believe that it is the sea.. Garda, my second lake visit in Italy after Lake Como, impressed me with this aspect.. It is quite easy to reach Lake Garda by bus, train and car.. Since it is located in the north of Italy, it takes approximately 1.5, 2 hours by car from the cities of Bologna, Milan, Venice and Verona You can come by renting. There is a large car park at the entrance of Sirmione Town. Its hourly rate is 1.5 euros.
How to Get to Lake Garda from Verona?
The closest city to Lake Garda Verona. You can reach Lake Garda in 1.5 hours by taking the ATV buses departing in front of Porto Nuova, the main train station of Verona.. Buses 162, 163, 164 and 165 go from Verona to Lake Garda. Moreover, it also visits the surrounding towns.. If you buy a daily card for ATV buses for 10 Euros, you can use it for 24 hours.. You can find more detailed information and the departure times of the buses on the official site of ATV buses. Summer and winter time schedules may differ.
Another way to get to Lake Garda from Verona is by train.. We bought a train ticket from Verona Porta Nuova train station in the direction of Desenzano del Garda Sirmione. By paying 4.45 euro per person, we arrived in the Desenzano town in 40 minutes. If you wish, there is a train to Peschiera Town. You can also ride it. From here you can take a ferry or bus to Sirmione.. I would like to remind you that there is no direct train access to Sirmione Town.
Desenzano is one of about 20 towns around Lake Garda, where mostly summer houses are located.. It only takes ten minutes to walk from the train station to the shore of Lake Garda.. Afterwards, a beautiful lake view awaits you.. Desenzano is the most populated town on Lake Garda.. But there’s no such air. This is one of the places where life moves slowly.
We go to the ticket office to inquire about the tickets of the ferry that departs for Sirmione without wasting time.. For the ferry that will depart in about half an hour, we give 6 euros for a round trip and buy our tickets for Sirmione Town. We spend half an hour walking by Lake Garda. Sirmione is staring at us on the opposite shore. I can’t wait for it to be 12:00 as soon as possible. When the time comes, we get on the ferry and start moving on Lake Garda.. Taking advantage of the nice weather, instead of sitting inside, I grab a place outside, just like on Istanbul ferries We are in Sirmione in about 15 minutes.
Places to Visit in Sirmione Town
To the interior of Lake Garda This is a secluded idyllic town.. I have heard countless times that it is one of the first choices of honeymooners in Italy.. When I saw the town, I understood why. It would be a wonderful idea to spend a honeymoon in such a romantic, quiet and peaceful town.
As soon as you enter Sirmione Town, Scaliger Castle, also known as Sirmione Castle, greets you with its impressive structure.. The walled castle was used for the defense of Sirmione for centuries.. You can visit Scaliger Castle by paying 6 euro. We didn’t choose to go inside the castle as we came for a day, but I’m sure it will be worth it to watch the view of Sirmione and Lake Garda from the tower!
We catch our eye on the fruits sold at the stands around Scaliger Castle, they are so inviting that we can’t help but take them.. When we see sliced watermelon, pineapple, peach as well as ice-cold lemonade, we take a glass from it and continue on our way.. Lemonade made from fresh lemons from Sirmione is unlike anything I’ve had before. A fruit plate is 2 euros, a glass of lemonade is 1 euro.
After Scaliger Castle, you step into the colorful world of the town with shops, ice cream shops (they are quite numerous) and restaurants lined up one after the other.. If you go during the peak season, unfortunately, you will get overwhelmed after a while, but the town is so cute that even this situation starts to catch your eye.
While you are walking along Via Dante, you come across Santa Maria Maggiore, the largest church in the town.. Compared to other European cities, this is an unpretentious church that is compatible with the identity of the town.
You must have seen the most photographed house of Sirmione Town.. The stone house, lost in the pink-purple bougainvillea, has undertaken the promotion of the town.. You’ll be lucky if you find the house with a queue in front of it empty to take a photo.
There are many shops where you can buy souvenirs from Sirmione.. Especially if you are interested in plates, glasses and ornaments like me, this town is for you! You can find many kitchen utensils embroidered with Italian patterns at very reasonable prices.. I bought four plates costing between 4 and 6 euros each.. Every time I make pasta, I remember my dear Sirmione Olive oil and lemon are also very famous.
Sirmione’s most famous street Vittorio Emanuele. Surrounded by restaurants and shops, the street is perhaps the most lively spot in town.. The only thing I didn’t like about this place was that cars are allowed on the narrow street.. Sirmione is a town with many options for eating and drinking.. When you are hungry, you can taste delicious seafood and olive oil dishes.. We tried the famous Sirmione ice cream as we had a heavy breakfast in Verona.. There are so many ice cream shops that we were confused about which one to enter and decided on the long queue in front of it, Ai Cigni.. It was really worth the wait, both the portion was huge and the taste was great.. I say don’t leave Sirmione without eating ice cream.
Sirmione is a town famous for its healing waters.. While walking on the streets, you can often come across thermal hotel signs, don’t be surprised by this.. From past to present, being treated with healing waters has become one of the reasons for choosing this place.. Speaking of health, the town of Limone Sul Garda, which is only 70 km away from Sirmione, should not be missed.. Scientists who determined that no one living here had a heart attack, determined that the reason for this was due to a genetic mutation.. Scientists who determined that the people living in the town secrete a protein that cleans the fat in their heart vessels, also revealed a surprising fact.. This is very interesting when you think about the thousands of people who die from heart attacks every year.
We took the ferry from Sirmione at 19.00 and returned to Desenzano, and from there we went to the train station and set off for Verona.. The beauty of Sirmione did not leave my mind all the way. I still miss photos of Garda’s “charming and haughty” beauty. One of the most beautiful towns in Italy with its narrow stone streets, lemon trees, small houses and boutique hotels Sirmione. We could only travel for 5-6 hours, but if you have the opportunity, I recommend you to stay for 1 night and explore the surrounding towns.
