IELTS Preparation Guide – How to Prepare for IELTS?
IELTS preparation guide fresh from the oven, here you go! ☺
In our previous articles, we talked about topics such as “Guidelines for Applying to Graduate Studies in Europe”, “X in Europe (this x is so many that which one should we write :))”. Today we take a step back and go back to the days of applying to graduate school and we will talk about IELTS, which everyone who sets out on this path must overcome sooner or later.. In other words, how to prepare for IELTS? We’ll talk about what awaits you from the IELTS process.
Let’s say you want to do master’s degree in Europe, you have English but it’s not that great. Is my English sufficient, IELTS or TOEFL you say where to prepare now and you don’t have the budget or time to go to the course for them. Let’s give the good news first, it’s not that hard! First you need to decide which exam to take, then you need to understand the logic of the exam, and then take this exam job seriously and study.. After all, isn’t the secret of success always the same way? ☺
IELTS Preparation
We both have very limited time to apply for IELTS when we both decide to masters in Europe and we didn’t have the student budget or time to go to the IELTS course. Let’s also repeat that we have been studying in public school all our lives and have not learned private school English.. In other words, we can say that we grew up in the same conditions as 90 percent of the people in Turkey.. And if we prepared for IELTS in such a short time (approximately 2 months) and got 8.0 out of 9.0 in the exam, you can too! ☺ There is light at the end of the tunnel, just believe it! ☺
So how we prepared for IELTS, how we got a high score in IELTS and how long it took to prepare; Let’s come to the step-by-step explanation part;
What is IELTS? And IELTS or TOEFL?
IELTS, an internationally recognized test to measure your general or academic English level, organized by the UK (and Australia). It consists of 4 parts as reading, writing, listening and speaking and takes approximately 3 hours.. Reading, writing and listening are in the same exam session, speaking is on the same day as the exam or the next day.. You learn your exam result 2 weeks after you take the exam.. Please note that your test result is valid for 24 months.. ☺
Your exam result is evaluated out of the highest grade of 9.0, and if you get a score of 6.5, you pass the ‘psychological limit’.. Although some graduate departments, especially verbal departments, require a higher score (such as 8.0), if you get a score between 6.5 and 7.5, your way is clear.
Academic IELTS or General IELTS
IELTS, one of which is ‘academic‘ the other is ‘general‘. You can choose ‘academic’ if you are entering privately for university or master’s degree, but the ‘general’ one is also valid internationally and we both entered and survived the ‘General IELTS’. If you ask us, you don’t need to enter the ‘academic’ one.
IELTS is & TOEFL is it
IELTS or TOEFL is it. It will be a simple answer, but we think that if you are targeting Europe or considering a job or internship in Turkey IELTS, if you are thinking of America TOEFL. Although the difficulty varies from person to person, the general opinion is that TOEFL is more difficult.. The reason is that you have to talk completely in front of the computer and the entire exam is passed on the computer.. IELTS, on the other hand, has a version that you can enter both on the computer and in the classical method.
How to prepare for IELTS Without going into details, How to apply for IELTSlet’s talk about it;
How to Apply for IELTS?
There are two institutions that IELTS has agreements with and that organize IELTS in Turkey. IDP and British Council.
First you need to go to one of these two websites and choose the city where you will take the exam.. Unfortunately, this exam is not held in every city.. For now It is only done in Ankara, Istanbul, Adana, Bursa and Izmir in Turkey. After choosing one of these five cities and then choosing an exam date that suits you, you fill out the form and you are given an account number at the end.. After depositing IELTS’ exam fee to this account number, the process is complete!
How much is the IELTS fee?
How much is the IELTS fee? If you’re wondering, let’s say; As of April 2019.. The fee was 200 TL higher, that is, 1100 TL instead of 900 TL, but we have no experience in this regard.. Therefore, if you intend to do so, it would be best to consult Google about it.
IELTS exam quotas end about 3-4 weeks in advance.. Therefore, it is useful to reserve your place at least 1 month before the date you plan to enter..
Let’s come to the benefits of orange peel. ☺
How to Prepare for IELTS? Is an IELTS Preparation Course Required?
If you have IELTS preparation and the budget to attend IELTS preparation, Of course, it will help you to find a suitable course for you.. But since we are prepared without a course, we can say at least based on our own experience; Course is not required to be successful in IELTS.
We prepared for ‘We’ in a period of 2 months.. During these two months, we created a strict working discipline for ourselves and set a rule; We would study for this exam for 2 hours every night.. And indeed, for 2 months, we studied our lesson almost every evening without disturbing it.. In the last week, we did an IELTS test every evening.. So we’re pretty much back to our OSS pace!
So where did we start?
1-) Solve a sample IELTS exam and find out your level
Take time for this first and leave the phone aside as if you are really in the exam and take a sample exam from one of the online resources we will suggest you shortly. Since this is your first try, it probably won’t go as well as you want and you will get a low score (we did too). But this is just the beginning to see what the exam looks like and find out your real level.
2-) After learning your level, study all 4 sections separately
Reading, writing, listening, and speaking, one by one.
IELTS Preparation: IELTS Reading Section
You should practice a lot for the Reading Section, make it a habit to read the question first and then the paragraph, and then ‘scanning’ With the method they say, you have to cut where there is an answer and focus there.. You also need to consider the time issue and always work at home by keeping time..
IELTS Preparation: IELTS Listening Section
Listening is actually a section that is not difficult but you need to practice a lot. It is necessary to be constantly sober here because while you are waiting to hear an answer, that answer has already passed and other answers may have passed.. And you only listen once in the exam. That’s why this is the section where we practice and work the most.
IELTS Preparation: IELTS Writing Section
In the
Writing part, more than your creativity or the interestingness of what you write; they look at the progress of your writing in the form of introduction-development-result and the correctness of the grammar. So shake it in the writing part as much as you can, but as long as it goes in the form of input-development-result. ☺
IELTS Preparation: IELTS Speaking Section
Speaking, on the other hand, is done on the exam day or the days following it, as we said above, and a biro dada is assigned to you. you talk to a person for 15 minutes. Here, the subject can be any subject such as your choice of shoes, life on Mars or the importance of sports in human life.. Here too, everything you say does not need to be true, as long as you speak fluently. Your accent is also not important, but you will be expected to speak fluently, using different words and conjunctions.. For Speaking, we will definitely recommend you to watch the examples on Youtube channels that we will write below..
We used free online resources while working at home on our own, and we didn’t need anything else.
