In Lapland The next morning we put on our thermal suits again. They gave a helmet over our berets.. The safari we will do today will also take 4 hours.. But this time we will go on safari not with husky dogs but with Snowmobiles.. First of all, we learned how to use this tool in the form of a lesson.. They take their jobs very seriously.
Two people got on snowmobiles and started the safari in the forest, following the signs and directions, on the roads marked for us.. Steering handles are heated from the inside so your fingers don’t get cold. The road we will travel today is 40 kilometers.. While we are traveling in convoy, the snowmobile officers are constantly checking by passing shortcuts.. He turns around from time to time and asks, “Is there a problem?” they ask and greet you with a smiling face.
About 2 hours later we arrive at the RIEKKOVARA reindeer farm and park our vehicles.
Here we are doing a little tour with the sledges pulled by the Reindeer. 2 people sitting side by side on sleds. There’s a reindeer post on your seat again. You lead a reindeer like a carriage. There is a sled instead of a wheel.. You don’t have to manage, though, because the deer already know the way.. Although this is not as enjoyable as husky sleds, it is still beautiful.
Local people living here are called “Sami”. We eat Reindeer steak in a charming chalet run by a husband and wife. They serve the steak with Blueberry marmalade. We finish this delicious meal with a nice glass of wine.. During the meal, they tell us a little about the reindeer.
There are 5,000 kinds of reindeer. Here, they caught the reindeer wandering in nature with lasso and made notches on the tips of their ears.. These notches mean a kind of sign, and each family’s mark, namely the notch, is different from each other.. Captured and marked deer now belong to that family. The Reindeer hide has a total of 6,000 hairs per square centimeter.. And the hollow of the bristles is filled with air. It also has a climate effect.. The air in the hairs, which is warmed by body heat, keeps the animal warm.. The antlers of the reindeer are like velvet. Over time, the animal was peeling them by rubbing them left and right.. Female deer get antlers during pregnancy. 1 month after birth. Horns grow 2 cm per day. The antlers of female deer are shorter but more branched. The stags are longer but less branched.. Every summer, the horns of the males fall off and come out again towards the winter.
After dinner, the Sami lady here sings a local song to us and hands over our reindeer driver’s licenses.
