Bodensee Travel Notes
It’s been a month since we moved to Munich and we started making plans ‘where are we going now?’ from the second week.
Our first stop, Germany-Austria-Switzerland The rest of the area where its borders intersect was the beautiful Lake Bodensee and its surroundings.. While searching on the internet, you may come across this place as Lake Constance, know that you are looking at the Bodensee.. During our trip to these three countries-a lake-themed tour, we were amazed by the Bodensee and we understood why Germany is referred to as a ‘promenade’! Bodensee is especially frequented by elderly Germans as a summer resort and in sunny weather.
Think about it this way, the three countries are so intertwined in Bodensee that you can get to Austria by ferry in 40 minutes and to Switzerland by bus.. There are even those who live and work here in Switzerland!
The part of Bodensee on the German border is located in the Baden region and you can reach it by car in 2.5 – 3 hours from Stuttgart or Munich.. Those who want to reach by public transport can look at the train and bus options at https://www.goeuro.com/. As usual, we were not surprised by the cheapness and went from Munich to Konstanz by buying a bus ticket for 20 Euros. This is a place where you forget you are in Germany. We toured the towns of Constance, Meersburg, Reichenau and Lindau in two days. If we had a third day, we would visit Friedrichshafen, if you have time, you can use it.. And even if we had time, we would definitely cycle here, because the Konstanz cycle route is one of the most popular cycling routes in Europe and it is a route longer than 200 km through 3 countries.
<
If we come to the point, glad we went! We couldn’t get enough of visiting Bodensee in 2 days and the weather that never smiled on us in Munich treated us very well in Bodensee.. All of the small towns surrounding Bodensee are extremely cute to stay in, we chose Konstanz because it was easy to reach both from here and other towns, and it was very enjoyable to go on the winding green roads that reach the town and to watch the magnificent view of the lake.
<
Do we praise what? But it deserves it! If you happen to be in Germany, you can easily include Bodensee in your plans.
Konstanz
This overly cute town on the shore of the Bodensee lake is a place for both old Germans and students due to the University it houses. as well as a frequent destination for those who came from Turkey and longed for the sun like us.
One of the reasons why the city is so beautiful is that it was not damaged in the Second World War.. According to a legend, when Germany was captured by the Allies in the war, the Mayor turned on all the lights of the city and the city seemed to be united with Switzerland.. Although no one dared approach Switzerland while the country was being bombed, Konstanz and the surrounding towns were spared.. We do not know if it is true or not, but the result does not change. This town is beautiful!
If you’re thinking of staying, you can choose a hotel that’s affordable for you, as the town is small anyway.. We stayed at Hotel Scheffeldot and were very satisfied with the hotel.. It was both close to the center and the price was affordable even though we made a last minute reservation.
If you’ve been to this town in spring time or summer, be sure to see if there is a spring festival or carnival in the city.. Konstanz is famous for its spring festivals by the lake!
Another thing we liked was the cleanliness of the lake and the fact that people were swimming in certain spots. We are a couple who cannot enter the pool due to various tics, we found this lake very clean.. So, the Municipality of Konstanz is working guys..!
Places to Visit
Take a tour around the center of Konstanz, which consists of narrow streets, surrounded by brewers, coffee shops and restaurants. It’s very nice for the beach, but it makes more sense to throw yourself into the lakeside areas while you’re all the way to Konstanz.. That’s why, while visiting the Altstadt, that is, the old city part, you can see the famous ‘City Gate’ Schnetztor and the Obermarkt Square. After walking in >, you can think you’re done with the old city part.
If you are interested in Swiss chocolates, you can stop by the famous chocolate shop ‘Laderach’ in the center without going to the lakeside!
To the lakeside now!
If you are interested in botany, be sure to stop by the Mainau Islet, 8 km from the center of Konstanz.. If you did not come by car, you can reach the center of Konstanz by taking the bus number 4 in 10 minutes.. Although the entrance to the island is a bit expensive, if you have children, the vegetation, scenery, playground, greenhouse and butterfly garden of the island will definitely attract the attention of children! Admission is 17.50 Euros for adults and free for children up to the age of 12.
Although this Islet of Mainau is on the German border, it was owned by the Swedish aristocratic Bernadotte family.. It’s clear why the entrance is so expensive!
Stadtpark Konstanz
Our favorite venue in Konstanz. Imagine a huge park by the lake; Some are sunbathing, some are juggling, some are doing yoga, some are drinking beer, some are playing ball, some are dancing, but no one interferes.. I think this is our favorite part of the parks in Europe.. As a matter of fact, we loved this cheerful, calm, peaceful and energetic park very much.
And if you go here in the evening, not during the day, things change! We said let’s go through the park we went to during the day and go in the evening and bingo! The old people had withdrawn from the park, the young people had turned on their beers and everyone was having a great time (the blog is here, so we stop here, we mean grab some beers). we did not go to the aquarium. It’s a good thing we didn’t go because we didn’t pay 11 Euros per person to see how the poor penguins and turtles are kept in a tight space.
The Konstanz Thermal Pool was the only place we couldn’t go because we had little time and was the only place we stayed inside.. Especially if you come in winter time, don’t miss this thermal pool by the lake.
Reichenau:
Excuse me, this islet of Konstanz makes you say ‘is this Germany?’ but ‘Germany’ This island, unrelated to the rest of the world, is also on the UNESCO World Heritage List.. It is best to walk around the botanical gardens and animal farms.
We spent half a day on the island and first visited its famous monastery and then its gardens.
Food and Drink Section:
Like all our trips, our trip to Bodensee was full of food and drink and we came back to Munich with our ‘rice and a half dry on top’ look.
Constanzer Wirsthaus: Evening in Konstanz we had our dinner here. The location of the place, which is a mixture of beer garden and restaurant, is very beautiful and the view is incredible. We ate and drank for two people and paid 35 Euros.. Prices are also very affordable compared to Konstanz. He entered the places we recommended from the first row.
We also had lunch at the Hafenhalle Biergarten. Beers are around 4 Euros and potato salad, which is the famous snack of these regions, namely Kartoffelsalat is very good.. In short, go and eat.
For those who want a Mexican restaurant, Burroburro, for those who want to try Konstanz’s famous ice creams, Gladina Eis Café can be tried.. We didn’t go to Burroburro, but we loved Gladina’s ice cream.
Meersburg
Let’s come to Meersburg part. You can reach Meersburg by taking the ferries that depart from Konstanz every 15 minutes, in 30-40 minutes, for 6 Euros per person.. That’s how we did it.
The first beauty that should be seen by those who have come this far is undoubtedly the Lake Dwelling Museum, the photograph of which you can see below, namely the Lake Landscape Museum.. Here is another place that will make you forget that you are in Germany! You can access the museum’s website at http://www.pfahlbauten.com/
The famous, garden-surrounded Salem Abbey in the north of Meersburg (Ziesterzienser Priorat Kolster Birnau, yes real name this!) but we chose to see the Old Meersburg Castle instead, as our time was limited.. We have nothing to say about the castle, but if your time is limited, you can skip this place.. The important thing is not to miss the Lake Dwelling Museum!
To start touring the beautiful streets of Meersburg, when you get off the ferry, you can take the steep, winding staircase that starts from the harbor square and walk up to the castle.
If you come on Friday, you can visit the center of the town. The market is set up at Marktplatz and you can try local wines.
Lindau:
The last stop of our Bodensee tour was to stop by Lindau on our way back.. Just like Meersburg and Konstanz, Lindau is tiny, but very beautiful.
After drinking coffee in a coffee shop in the central Maximillian Strasse, whose name we can’t remember and regret that we haven’t recorded it, it took us only 1 hour to tour the whole town and the lake.
If you have longer time, you can join boat tours or extend your lakeside pleasure a little longer! In fact, if you have time, you can go to Bregenz right next to it.
We’ve just come to the end of a trip and naturally our travel article.
Have a great trip!
Loves!
