“What would it be like if I lived abroad?”.. I’m sure some of you may have such questions in your mind from time to time, while some of you may have set their minds on trying like me and have already locked themselves in the goal Well, let’s say you got what you wanted and you left, have you ever wondered what to do when you start living in a new country? In this article, I will share my own experiences from Germany and Munich and try to explain how the first days went abroad and what to do in the process following the move.. I think my experiences can be useful to my friends who will relocate or want to settle in another country, especially in Europe.
The first thing I had to do as soon as I settled abroad was to find a place to stay; because I needed a home address both to register with the municipality and to inform the relevant official institutions that I am now living in that country, and to open the bank account I needed to receive a salary.. There are many issues to know and pay attention to when buying a house, I have explained them in detail in this article.. For now, let’s know that the first thing to do after moving abroad is finding a house.
There is no logic like shipping companies like us and delivering all kinds of documents to the person against signature by courier; One of the house keys given when you take the house is the locked mailbox below and all documents are left in this box by mail.. In other words, a home address and a mailbox are required to start the settlement process
As soon as you buy the house, foreigners’ office in your city. what should you go. You can ask the consulate where this institution is and its original name while obtaining a visa, or you can search it on the internet.. Do not forget to find out the working hours and whether it works by appointment or by going and getting a queue number.. For Munich, I went to the government agency Kreisverwaltungsreferat (KVR) to get my residence permit (Meldebescheinigung). You can reach this institution at Ruppertstrasse 19 and by getting off at the Poccistrasse stop of the U3 metro, you need to have your passport and rental agreement with you when you go.
There is no need to make an appointment before you go. I got the serial number from the section with the letter where my surname starts, half an hour later it was my turn and I went to the officer and registered.. During registration, questions such as your marital status, if you are married, whether your spouse lives with you, do you have children, and which religion do you belong to?. All these criteria determine the taxes to be deducted from your salary by associating with the tax number that will be created after registration and which you must share with the place of work.. For example, if you are married and your spouse moves with you but does not work, less tax is deducted from your salary.. Religion is also important, if you are not a Christian, definitely say this, otherwise the church tax will be deducted from your salary every month
If your workplace wants certificate of good conduct or Führungszeugnis in German, which coincides with our criminal record, among the starting documents, you can also submit this document while you’re here. You can ask the officer. Because I forgot, I went again later It is necessary to pay 13 Euros for Führungszeugnis.
When the registration is finished, you need to keep the session paper very well, as long as you continue to live there, this document must be kept. may be needed at any time. If you found a temporary place when you first went, and then your address has changed because you moved, you will have to do the same thing again, of course.. The tax number and if you have applied, the registration documents are not given immediately, unlike the residence paper, and they come later by mail, what we said, the mailbox is very important.
After registering, I went to one of the sim card shops to get a German phone line. They told me that I would need my session registration, but it turned out that it was not needed because I would buy a prepaid line, they said it was needed when they asked for postpaid.. I’ve waited in vain, but since I had to give my Turkish line to the ads I was looking for while I was still in Turkey, it would have been unreasonable to change the line without clarifying the house issue.. I preferred Congstar, they said the best internet is there. Internet connections of cheaper ones can be a problem in places far from the city center.. Update: I changed Congstar’s internet package to only 1 GB. I bought a 3 GB package from an operator called maxxim.de. The number can be ported, but if you don’t speak German, the process can be a bit difficult to understand.
We found a house, registered, got a hotline. Now it’s time to open a bank account. I made a tactical mistake in this regard; I did not hurry by saying that I have time to get a salary for the free bank account of the DKB bank, which everyone says on the forums that they must be hungry from this bank, somehow, the bank account is not needed for now.. In Germany, banks charge monthly account maintenance fees, not annual fees like we do, the fees are between 2-6 Euros.. There are also online banks (without any branches) and only they are free..
I filled out the online forms of DKB online bank to open a free account and they gave me a reference number.. The next step was authentication, which was pretty ridiculous.. It is necessary to show the passport to the officer on the opposite side by opening the webcam and make sure that he reads the areas he wants by putting them in front of the camera.. I couldn’t do it, after 5 minutes of trying, the woman told me to download an application from the phone instead of the computer and call it from the application, I guess because the resolution of the phone camera is higher than that of the computer, it can be read more clearly.. I did it, this time the connection was lost in the middle and I struggled for more than half an hour.
Since I passed the authentication successfully, I thought that my account would be opened in a few days and they would send my IBAN number and debit card.. As I expected, I found an envelope in my mailbox a few days later, but it said “Sorry we can’t open an account for you” So I wanted to be a customer and they rejected me! I was very surprised, it’s not a credit card, it’s not a risk, why would the bank refuse?
While waiting for these events, the day came when I had to give my bank account number to the company, other free online banking I also applied to ING DiBA, but I didn’t have time to wait for it to open.. So I went to the branch of a bank called Pasha Pasha Münchner Bank and had to open an account for a monthly fee of 2.5 Euros.. I will use the online services of the bank, otherwise it is 5.5 Euros per month.. Worst of all, it was necessary to pay something like a 50 Euro deposit to open an account because they were signing up somewhere.. When you said I don’t want this membership, you got your 50 Euro back, but a year later! I had to do it all, I really hope that money comes back in a year. What I had to do from the very beginning was to apply to DKB and ING DiBA at the same time because it was free, then I wouldn’t be late while waiting for someone.. But as I said, I never took into account the possibility of ‘rejection’.. I am satisfied with ING DiBA and it is completely free, those who settle in Germany can open an account.. Moreover, when your salary is deposited into this account, it gives a one-time gift of 100 Euros (they understand, no extra notification is required). Click to begin the account creation process.
I think we’ve settled the bank issue as well.. Another issue that is as complex as the bank is health insurance. I have to admit that when I started working in a company in Turkey, I was looking for a system that works as “everything is done automatically from a contracted bank and insurance company”; because in Germany I had to choose everything all the time and of course I had no idea which one was better.
There are state and private insurances in health insurance, I am a state For a long time I thought insurance was private; because we have a lot of different companies like X Insurance, Y Insurance, I haven’t been able to figure out how the state becomes a state yet.. In order to become a member of private insurance, the annual gross salary must be above a certain amount.. Without much tinkering, I asked the people in the company which insurance they subscribed to, and with the herd psychology, I applied to the Technician Krankenkasse state insurance, which is used by the majority, on the internet.. Then they send a piece of paper with the membership number by mail, and it is necessary to give it to the company.. Half of the insurance premiums will be deducted from my salary, and the company will pay the other half.. When I use health services, I also write about my experiences, people generally say that hospitals are good.
The last thing we do is going to the Turkish consulate and saying ‘I live here now’. For some reason, Germany, to which we have already applied, cannot transmit it and we have to do it separately.. After all, your address should appear in Germany when you log in via e-government.. Otherwise, the General Health Insurance debt will arise, and there will also be problems in transactions such as voting.. There is a penalty if it is not done within 21 days after settling in, it must be done as soon as possible.. It can be done by sending mail, I made an appointment and went in person.. Those who want to go in person like me, select the relevant consulate from consulate.gov.tr and then click on the Identity Procedures.. Get your appointment from the make an appointment button. Have proof of residence (Meldebescheinigung) and identity card with you. After the process is finished, check if your address has changed via e-government.
The first month has passed by settling down and completing the deficiencies, it is very important to contact people living in the destination, both to speed up the process and not to make mistakes due to ignorance.. I’ve read most of the forums on Couchsurfing and Internations sites.
There are two topics that I say ‘good luck’. First, I’m glad I moved in winter. I would be sad if I missed the sunny and hot days, which are already short, because of these rushes.. Secondly, it is good that I have been to Munich before as a tourist (as well as 3 times); Because it is the center of the city, I could only go to Marienplatz, which is the first place I would come to if I were a tourist.. I hope I will be able to enjoy living in Munich in the coming months when my order is settled.. For now, I’m trying to adapt to a job other than these placement situations.
I will continue to share my experiences and what I learned, Life and Travel to stay informed.
