I’ve been to Southeast Asia many times. I got a gate visa from Cambodia; I was already able to go to Thailand without a visa. But that Laos Visa to Laos pissed me off whenever I intended. until this year. Although they kept me waiting for 1 week, I finally got my Laos Visa and made a 1 week trip to enter the Thai border and return from Luang Parabang, the most beautiful city in the country.. In this article, I told you everything I saw and experienced in Laos as a Laos travel guide.
Let me state from the beginning: It is not easy to travel in Laos.. Thailand is much more backward than countries like Vietnam. They have been exploited for years. Although unrelated, they were involved in the Vietnam war. They have become the country with the most bombs in the world.
One always feels sad when going to Laos, which has suffered so much.. You see the pain in people’s eyes.
But the most beautiful thing I’ve seen in Laos is “The kindness and respect in people’s eyes.” it happened. That’s why I will talk about the good things about Laos and talk about the hopeful aspects as much as I can.
1. Where is Laos & What is its Capital ?
Laos, east of Thailand; northeast of Cambodia; It is located in the west of Vietnam and China.
Vientiane, the Capital of Laos.. Actually it used to be Luang Prabang. It later became Vientiane.
The country is considered small. Laos has a population of around 6.5 million.. More than 10% of this population lives in the Capital Vientiane. You can read my detailed suggestions on this subject in my Where is Laos Which Continent article.
2. Does it require a visa ?
Yes, Laos is unfortunately from us, namely T.C.. asks citizens for visas. When entering Laos, we must obtain a Laos visa, and unfortunately this visa cannot be obtained from Turkey.
I got Laos Visa from Thailand.. It can also be bought from neighboring countries Vietnam and Cambodia.
Be sure to watch how we went to Laos in this video
Sometimes a day, sometimes 1 day, depending on the mood of the employees. A week later, a Laos visa is issued.
I have explained the details of this at length in my How to Get a Laos Visa article]. You can see all the alternatives in that article.
There are cases of especially ridiculous credit card requests! Anyways. Let’s continue our topic.
3. About the Country
Laos is a communist country. There are only 5 countries left in the world ruled by communism.. These are:
- China
- Vietnam
- Cuba
- North Korea
- Laos
<
When you say communism, don’t think of a closed country. In fact, almost all countries (except North Korea) seem to have lost the fight against Capitalism in the 21st century.
The private sector is free, most people can do whatever they want.. But there is still a one-party order. The unions and organizations that support this administration are actually a kind of party.
Communism, but there are also those with Mercedes; who has nothing…
But there is actually only 1 party. If “Democratic Republic” is written at the beginning of the country; which Laos is actually officially known as the People’s Democratic Republic of Laos; there is not much Democracy in those countries.
So what other problems are there in Laos!
There are still places where there is a curfew (Curfew). In particular, some shops are closed before the specified hours.. It requires special permission to open it.
<
Whatever the management says actually happens.. even in the media. Almost all media organs. Do you know what one of the most important crimes is? Criticizing the management…
There are hardly any nightclubs open after 12pm.. It’s all closing…
By the way, if we look at it as a language: Laos Laos. Most people do not speak English, but those who speak French a little more.
The common religion in Laos is Buddhism, which is also dominant in this geography.. But in Laos, there are also certain different belief systems.. They believe in spirits and stuff.
Before you come to Laos, check all transportation alternatives from SITE. I think the best site in this region is 12goasia.
4. The Country of Laos in Brief
Let me briefly talk about the history of Laos, the economy and health system in Laos, and the educational situation:
- French colony between 1893-1945, Communism in 1975 began to be managed with. It was a kingdom at first, then the Republic dominated.. This is a rare situation in this geography.
- This is the poorest 133rd place in the world.. country. So much so that 182 of 1,000 children born every year; He dies before he reaches 5 years old.
- There is no proper health system. When they are sick, they often do not go to the hospital.. Because there is no need. There is no medicine and equipment in the hospital anyway.. There is no electricity in some places.. But the situation was different in military hospitals.
- According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, 47.3% of every 5 children under the age of 5 cannot grow up.. Because they don’t have enough food sources.
- By the way, you may know that the wealth of the ‘1% of the rich in the world is equal to the wealth of the others, the remaining 99%.
I read an article about Laos: How can you bring democracy when most people are illiterate?
- 80% of the people live in rural areas and earn their living from rice.
- During the US-Vietnam war, 270 million tons of bombs fell on these lands.. This is 2. More bombs dropped on Europe in World War II. Laos wasn’t even part of the war in those days.. It was the most bombed country in the world.. (1964-1973)
- 30% of these bombs did not explode. still somewhere. That’s why agriculture is so problematic.. Hundreds of people are still injured by the explosion of these bombs.. They even die.
- Monthly income per capita is around $150. That’s a good number considering what I’ve seen in the country.
- The biggest export items are coffee.. So is Vietnam. Even Vietnam is the 2nd largest in the world.. coffee maker.
- Traffic flows on the right in Laos. There are hardly any roads in the country.
You can view all the hotels in Laos from the cheapest to the most expensive FROM THIS SITE .
5. What Is The Currency
The currency of Laos is known as the Laotian Kip. At the time I went, 1 dollar was worth 8,575 Lao kip.
By the way, a little information: They change money almost everywhere at the same rate.. Because it’s under state control.. The same in the bank; also at the currency exchange around the corner.
I had no problem exchanging money, especially in the big and touristic places: Vientiane, Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang. Dollar, euro and pound are the most converted currencies.
6. How to go ? How to Travel ?
Going to Laos is actually not that easy.. No direct flights. There are no proper flights anyway.
But you can go to cities such as the Capital Vientiane and Luang Prabang by connecting.. Especially those who come to Thailand can easily pass to Laos.. Before buying a flight ticket to these places, I would say Best Air Ticket Search Check out my article.
Here I will answer all of your questions that I think will come from you on this subject Where is Laos, In Which Country How to get there I explained at length in my article. From there, you can read all my suggestions for going to Laos, line by line.
The best time to go to Laos is December-May. Because this period is more drier.
7. Places to Visit in Laos
Let’s talk about places to visit in Laos. Actually, Laos is not such a giant country.. But the roads are so bad; If you can go from one place to another at 30 km per hour, how happy it is!
This is why you need to set aside at least 1 week to travel the country.. He already spends 2-3 days on the roads.. That’s why it should be 1 week so that at least it’s worth your visit.
I have been to 3 cities in Laos. These are
- Vientiane
- Vang Vieng
- And it became Luang Prabang. What places I visited in these 3 cities, I will now talk about them one by one.
In fact, I will talk about the places I have not been to in Laos below.. I hope you will have more time and see more places.
7.1 Vientiane
Vientiane is the place to be given 1 day, half a day as places to visit.. Maekong (Mekong River), one of the largest rivers in the world, also passes through Laos, and I think it is one of the places that must be witnessed in the evening, especially on the Thai border. Mekong River boat trip which is what I passed should also be on the list. Especially when passing from the west of Thailand to Laos, many tourists do these tours with overnight accommodation.
I couldn’t do it, but if you have the opportunity, definitely do it. But don’t expect luxury travel. Let me state it from the beginning.
By the way, let me also touch on the accommodation part: We stayed in a place called the Usouk hotel.. It was around $25 a night. The location and the comfort of the rooms were not bad. You can review HERE.
However, I have listed all the hotels in Vientiane one by one for you.. There is a place to stay for 6 dollars a night, or for 100 dollars.. To view :
Click on VIENTIANE HOTELS link.
Places to visit in Vientiane:
Most of the places to visit in Vientiane are temples and admission to all temples is 10,000 Kip. However, it is forbidden to enter with short shorts.
I have explained both temples and other places to visit one by one below:
- Pha That Laung : Considered a symbol of Laotian Buddhism. I haven’t seen much of it. Maybe it’s because I’ve seen more beautiful temples. There is also the Buddha lying inside. Looks like yellow gold plated on the outside but it’s not really. The temple, which is frequented by both tourists and local people to pray.
- Wat Phra Kaew : Buddhism museum. Almost all places to visit in Vientiane are located side by side.
- Wat Si Saket : This is where there are 6,840 buddha statues.
- Ho Pha Keo : It was the king’s worship center at the time. They’re all face to face anyway.
- Wat Ong Teu : Buddhist institute. They used to study here.
- Wat Si Muang : They would become a Buddhist temple.
- Buddha Park : This is the most important place. It’s actually the park that Laos uses the most in promotions.
Tuk tuks usually ask for 150,000 Kip to reach them, but I would rent a motorbike and travel freely.. We rented a motorbike from the place called Sport Guesthouse and gave 70.000 Kip for 1 day rental.
By the way, you can’t find a motor rental business anywhere. Buddha Park entrance fee is 15,000 Kip per person.
It is enough to wander inside for 1 hour. This is not actually a temple. Park. Over time, it has become the apple of the eye of tourism.. Architects built this park under the influence of religion.
- Walking Street : This is the area on the coastline (Makeong River). quite lively. Especially at night, everybody’s walking around here. Small shops, stalls, whatever you look for are here.
- Night Market : Pubs, concerts, restaurants. To me this was the liveliest place in Vientiane. All kinds of food stalls and restaurants were open until 12 at night.
There was an event on the day we went.. The first day I came to Laos, I was incredibly surprised to see such a place.
Because I was expecting a less developed place.. In fact, Vientiane did not bear the traces of Laos.. I realized this later. By the way, the beers are around 13,000 Kip and the meals around 30,000 Kip.
- Patuxay Gate: This door is one of the most important artifacts from the French.. Looks like the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. You can climb to the top floor and watch both Laos and Thailand from here.
Vientiane Food Places and Restaurants
Vientiane’ There are restaurants with Western cuisine in general.. Nice night markets are also set up in the evenings.. Near the riverside, young people have fun drinking their alcohol and eating their meals.. Vientiane has a very developed weather.
So where and what to eat in Vientiane, let me tell you a little about them :
- Vialy Steak House: Very good steak and western cuisine restaurant. Meats around 150,000, pasta 60,000, beer 20,000, noodles around 35,000 Lao Kip. The food of the place is good but as you can see it is very expensive. Even their beers are great. Expensive but very successful restaurant. Have your address in Vientiane.
- Cafe France : I told you there are French people everywhere. Here is the nice cafe left from them.. They sell dessert, sandwiches and coffee. Breakfast 30,000 Kip, coffee around 20,000 Kip.
- Dadacafe : Sandwiches 15,000 Kip, Coffee 18,000 Kip, Mini hamburgers are also famous and 35,000 Kip.
- Samba Steak House: One evening we were really hungry. This is Brazilian Steak House restaurant. Meat is fabulous. All you can eat and the menu is 188,000 Kip. A little pricey, but totally worth it.
7.2 Vang Vieng
Vang Vieng is a tiny place. I didn’t know whether to say town or village.. Located halfway between Vientiane and Luang Prabang. From both cities, transportation takes 4 hours.
Vang Vieng is mostly famous for its lagoons, walking routes and nature-oriented activities.. If you want to do nature-related activities, rent a motorbike, it may be on your list.. A maximum of 2-3 days is enough.
I stayed at the Garden Pany Hotel in Vang Vieng.. I paid 170,000 Laos Kip per night. Here view the hotel. The hotel was nice.
I also listed all other hotels. There are places to stay for 5 Euros per night.. Click to check it out.
By the way, Vang Vieng also has an interesting nightlife.. This is exactly the bakcpacker, so this is the place for backpackers. Especially Sakura Bar and Earth Bar are the bars most preferred by young people.
However, after nightfall, everyone goes to parties in the forests. We were incredibly tired, but maybe you would like to go.. Write it as a note.
Places to visit in Vang Vieng:
If you are going to visit Vang Vieng, you should definitely rent a motorbike. navigate. If you do not know how to drive a motorcycle, you can go to the region you want with daily tours or minibuses, but if you have a motorcycle, it will cost more.. Daily motor rental fees are 70.000 Lao kipi.
- Vieng Tara Villa : This is a hotel but it is legendary for taking pictures. They don’t let you go inside and take a photo by walking on the road in the middle of the rice fields.
I persuaded you by saying I’m a blogger.. You can also try your luck. But it’s okay to use the restaurant. Coke 10,000 Kips. If you want to stay at the hotel, which I recommend if you are in good condition, click on the Ving Tara Villa link and review.
- Pha Ngern View Point: I would not be exaggerating if I say 1,000 steps.. One of the best places to watch Vang Vieng. actually observation point. (The photo above was taken from that point.)
We should go out especially in the evening and enjoy the view.. But condition is required.. Just climbing, it takes about 1 hour. Make sure you have water and a drink with you.
- Blue Lagoon Tham Poukham Cave : This place is absolutely unnecessary.. On top of that, they want 10,000 Kip for entry.
Small lagoon. always crowded. I liked the next one, not this one.
- Blue Lagoon 3: There are a lot of Lagoons in this area. All of them are quite touristic, but this one is the most beautiful one.. But I say it again: the roads here are a disgrace.
This is 1. 8 km further from the lagoon. Nice place at the bottom of the mountain. But the crowd. Although it is difficult to go, it is a must-see in Vang Vieng.
You can even zipline a little at the top of this deep blue lagoon.. Tourists who usually come here to have fun and enjoy themselves are fascinated.
By the way spending 1 day with elephants everywhere, they wash them and sell feeding tours. Its price is 450,000 Kip.
I think it is unnecessary. I’ll explain why shortly.. Our next stop is in Luang Pragaban.
Vang Vieng Food Places and Restaurants
By the way, even though we talk about food in Vang Vieng, I can’t help but mention it.. Vang Vieng was not very rich in this regard.
Restaurants preferred by backpackers there is. mostly street food. Food is ok but not close to our taste. But you won’t go hungry.
- Luang Prabang Bakery : This is a nice place for breakfast. Croissants are around 20,000 Kip, orange juice around 20,000 Kip.
- Street Food : Since the name of this street is not available on google maps in English, let me describe it as follows: Luang Prabang Bakery, which I mentioned above. You can see many street food restaurants in the area.. Their prices are usually around 30-40.000 Kip.
I can’t recommend you a nice restaurant directly in Vang Vieng because there isn’t much restaurant I can recommend.. That’s why I’m moving on to my Luang Prabang recommendations, saying that you can enjoy it when you like, usually from restaurants that sell street cuisine.
7.3 Luang Prabang
Let’s come to the best stop.. My favorite city in Laos. The city, which has been the capital of this geography for hundreds of years,. Namely, Luang Prabang.
The huge old town district is under Unesco protection.. Tiny 2-storey buildings, clean streets, squares that smell of history.
Here’s Luang Prabang truly deserves to be the most beautiful city in Laos.
We are people from Vang Vieng We went to Luang Prabang by minibus again, paying 80,000 Kip per head.. Roads on this route are better than Vientiane-Vang Vieng. There are even a lot of double roads under construction.. The Chinese are building everywhere.
The streets in Luang Prabang, the markets are pleasant and quite regular.. Tourism is still incredibly widespread. There are dozens of restaurants and cafes. French people everywhere.
Hotels in the city start from 10-20 dollars per person.. We were a little out of town.. That’s why I won’t write the name of the hotel.
But I have listed the places to stay for 2 people, 8-10 dollars per night and the most luxurious ones.. CLICK to review according to your budget.
Places to visit in Luang Prabang :
Places to visit in Luang Prabang are also considered close to each other. And again, it is absolutely necessary to rent a motorbike and visit this beautiful city and its surroundings.. 1-day motor rental figures start from 80,000 Kip.
I stayed in Luang Prabang for 2 days. The places I visited and recommended are as follows :
- Kuang Si Waterfall : We say let’s go to the place where these beautiful waterfalls are with the bike we rented on the first day.. It is located approximately 1 hour from the city center.. Entry 20,000 Kip.
Incredible nature is wonderful. There are 6-7 waterfalls. The biggest waterfall at the end. You can also swim in between.
Come with your towel and swimming clothes.. i love it here. Spend at least 3-4 hours.
- Luang Parabang Elephant Camp : I mentioned above: In case there are those who want 450,000 Kip to bathe the elephants and spend time with them.. Here’s why don’t do this?
Because when you go to this campsite in person, you can get it done for 100-150,000 Kip.
I definitely recommend elephants to you, as I personally had one of the best experiences of my life.
I don’t know how to describe our moment of swimming by taking it to the Mekong River and hearing those cries of joy!
So, if you ever happen to be here, go to this campground and spend time with those cute elephants.
Address : http://www.luangprabangelephantcamp.com site. Already on the way back from Kuang Si Waterfall to Luang Prabang, it is on the left. It’s impossible not to see it.
- Mount Phousi : When the sunset comes, this is one of the must-see places.
Right in the old city center.. There is also a temple on the hill. The monks and commoners usually pray and bless. Entry here is 20,000 Kip.
- Wat Xieng Thong : The old town center in Luang Prabang is amazing. The temples and museum here are also very well preserved.
The most important of these temples is Wat Xieng Thong, the Buddhist Temple.. The temple, which was built in 1560, is like many other temples.
- Royal Palace Museum : This is a museum. I couldn’t stop by, I didn’t have enough time, but if you have time, you can also stop by here in the Old Town.
- Wat Mai Monastery : One of the biggest temples in Luang Prabang. It is located right in the Old City Center.
- Royal Ballet Theatre : We caught this at the last minute and they didn’t take us. If you have time for 1 evening, watch a legendary show in one of the most beautiful theaters of Laos.. It starts at 6 pm. There are shows on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
- Pak Ou Caves : I told you that you need to set aside at least 2 days for Luang Prabang.. Here is where you should spend 1 day. This is the sacred cave.
There are about 4,000 Buddha icons. You can take a tour to go to the cave, which is 25 km from Luang Prabang.. This tour includes a river cruise and village visits.
Luang Prabang Food Places and Restaurants
Sakkaline Rd. You can find all the restaurants and evening markets on the street.. From steak house restaurants to; You can find all of them in this region, from local dishes to restaurants where you can find each one.
Good food in restaurant around 50,000 Kip. Meats from 120,000 Kip, Noodles from 25,000 Kip. I mentioned above. Almost all businesses are owned by the French.
- Novelty Cafe : Coffee and croissant are good. Croissant 18,000 Kip, coffee 18,000 Kip.
- Night market food district : All night market is in this area. There is everything. If you are looking for hygiene, pass. If you say it doesn’t matter, you won’t go hungry.
- Opera House Grill Lao Kitchen : Kebab, doner kebab 45,000 Kip. It can be good if you’re hungry. Happy hour until 8pm and 3 small beers 32,000 Kip. I loved this place.
- Utopia Bar : We didn’t have time to go here. But many blogs had words of praise about this restaurant.
There were actually many more places to visit in Laos.. I will mention them below in the section What I Didn’t Do But My Suggestions to You.
8. Is the Country Expensive ?
I can’t say it’s cheap. In my opinion, it was even more expensive than Vietnam. I made a plan saying I would travel for 30-40 dollars on average, but 50 dollars a day was barely enough.
Especially restaurants are quite expensive.. Especially in Vientiane. Believe me, I was very surprised by this situation.
In Laos, where people live on $5 a day; I asked how pasta can be 6-7 dollars. What do you think the answer was?
Especially the French love this place.. The incoming investment. There are also restaurants that open; also opened a hotel.
That’s why they inflated the prices.. But in general terms:
- 1 liter of Gasoline 8400 Laotian Kip
- Motor rental prices are around 80,000 Laos Kip per day
- 20,000 Kip and 2 Kip for a telephone line gb internet 10,000 Kip for 5 days.
- 10 dollars per person for accommodation
- 10 dollars per person for events
- You will spend 5-10 dollars for nightlife.
9. Laos Nightlife and Entertainment
Laos nightlife is not as fun as in Thailand and other neighboring countries.
In general, nightlife is more active in pubs or hostels.. After all, Laos says, “We are good at nightlife.”
Actually, Laos is not even the right address for nightlife, parties and entertainment.. I think it’s a better destination for those who will make more nature and peace trips.
Entry to the venues is free. Drinks are; 1 beer is 10,000 Kip, cocktails are around 25,000 Kip.
However, I have prepared a separate guide for you on Laos nights and my suggestions.. To read : You can check my Laos Nightlife post. There you can see all my suggestions.
10. What are Laos Foods?
I have already touched on these issues above.. But let’s talk a little bit about Laos Dishes here.
Actually, Laos Cuisine has incredible similarities with both Thai and Vietnamese dishes.. Everything has spice. There’s also cilantro.
They also put eggs in most dishes.. It is also in salad; Also in soup.
By the way, pork is a must.. If you see meat in your meal, be sure to ask if it’s pork.. Definitely pork, especially if it’s cheap.
Also, insects abound in Laos they also eat. There are also scorpion eaters; I don’t know what a beetle. Usually fried. rich in protein. If you have stomach problems, stay away.
Now, sir.. First of all, noodles and rice are indispensable in Laos.. Their rice is tasteless and inconsistent as usual.
Noodles are a little thinner.. They are usually served as fried or boiled.. You can eat it for 1-2 dollars.
Meat is expensive in Laos. I never understood why. Meat was our most expensive meal.
Before you come to Laos, check out all transportation alternatives FROM THIS SITE. I think the best site in this region is 12goasia.
Fish is more affordable and quite tasty. Shrimp, squid and more. More affordable as well. Especially the grilled seafood is very good. But I say never eat it with sauce. Personally, I never got used to it.
By the way, there are 2 things left from the period the French exploited in Laos: There is bread everywhere.. They are also very good with coffee.. I was especially surprised to see so many kinds of bread.. It is not a common situation in this geography.
Come on, I’m here in Laos for you now. Let me list the most well-known dishes in order.
Famous Laos Dishes:
- Khao Piak Sen (Noodle Soup)
- Tam Muk Muang (Green Papaya Salad)
- Spring Rolls (Rice Rolls on the outside)
- Mok Pa (Steamed Fish)
- Baguette Pate (Baguette Sandwich)
- Gaeng Som ( Chicken Soup with Noodles)
Also, in almost all touristic cities, you can easily find dishes such as pizza, pasta and hamburgers.
Let me also talk about tropical fruits.
- Papaya
- Dragon fruit
- Star fruit
- Bananas
- Rambutan fruit (My Favorite)
- Mangosteen (This is my favourite)
- Pineapples
- Durian (Fruit that smells of feet). In this geography, fruit is gold, but I didn’t like it.)
<
So sir, as you can see, what is overstuffed in Laos; nor stay hungry. moderate touring. Breakfast is served with a croissant, tropical fruit plate or toast-eggs.
I recommend you to watch this video as well.. Be sure to check out my other Laos travel videos on my Youtube channel
As you can see, there is a solution for lunch and dinner.. For 5-10 dollars per meal, you can easily be satisfied.
Bonus: What I Didn’t Do But My Suggestions for You
There are actually many more places to visit in Laos.. Laos is bigger than you think.
But as I mentioned earlier, transportation is a big problem.. Therefore, if you have time for 2-3 weeks, I suggest you to see the following cities as well.
- Bokeo : This region is located in the northwest of Laos.. Famous for rainforest, mountains and hills. It is also the place where local people, especially those who still manage to preserve the culture, are seen and there is less tourism. There’s a place here specifically called the Gibbon Experience Office. Here you can join legendary tours. You can stay here, especially in the city called Huay Xai.
- Paksong : This is the geography with legendary waterfalls and coffee gardens. There are especially famous waterfalls called Tad Fane.. The photos are great too. Who knows what it would be like to see him alive!
- Nong Khiaw : Actually, this place was located close to Luang Prabang. When I say close, it takes more than 3 hours by car.
Geography of small towns, rice fields and hills.. It is a place especially praised by trekking lovers.
- Si Phan Don Region : Although there is no sea in Laos, there are 4000 islets in this region.. Anyway, Si Phan Don Islands means 4000 Islands.
The Mekong river runs through this region, and that’s why those islets were formed.. This place is located on the Laos-Cambodia border. The islands of Don Khon and Don Det are the largest.
- Luang Namtha : Located on the Chinese border. largest city in the northwest. Especially from the points visited by those who will pass from here to China.

- Wat Phu : Actually known as Vat Phou. Here are the temples of the Khmer Kingdom, the ancient kingdom of this geography.
- Phonsavan : Phonsavan means Heaven Hill. In particular, you can come to see the rural life of Laos and meet the cowboy culture.. It is also famous for its plains and valleys.
